I’ve got a few pieces in an art exhibition in a few months, and I’m trying something new for it. Going a bit (but not completely) abstract, and if I want a photo of the new work in the guide then I have to get my first piece finished in the next week. I’ve just added some bumpiness I can’t reverse, but I got the placement a bit wrong and now I’m not sure I like it :confounded: Abstract is hard! Just going to have to wait for it to dry, keep adding to it and hope it all turns out ok.

I don’t have a very clear image of how I want it to look, which I’m not sure is a good thing or bad.

Sounds interesting Kim @konyskiw. Always good to have a new challenge, but having that time pressure isn’t fun. Sometimes you need to be able to ā€˜get away’ from something new for a while before you know whether you love it or not! I’m intrigued by your ā€˜bumpiness’ - are you collaging?

Good Luck Kim…I like abstract but also have difficult in knowing how and what to do…I bought books for advice and help but I still struggle with it…
today I have a basic boring landscape…lol

The time pressure can be a bit frustrating, but it definitely helps me get things done. I’ve had another similar painting I’m doing for myself, but because there’s no deadline on that it’s been half finished for over a year

No collage, I’ve got modelling paste, it’s sort of like an extra thick acrylic so you can build it up a bit. Unfortunately not quite as thick as I wanted as it loses a bit of the height as it dries, but hopefully it’ll be ok after another coat. My paintings haven’t sold at this exhibition for a few years, and I’ve got it in my head that maybe they’re a bit too flat (I occasionally get people asking if they’re digital work), so this is my attempt to see if adding texture helps. I’ll put a photo up next week when I’ve got a bit more (or hopefully all of it) done.

@teabreaks That looks like a chilly morning just as it’s warming up into a beautiful, sunny day!

That’s an interesting solution, Kim. I know when people see one of my pictures and say ā€œIt’s just like a photo!ā€ I grit my teeth and think ā€œoh no it isn’t, just take a proper lookā€¦ā€ but actually they are giving it what they see as very high praise. I’ve never had ā€œIs it digital art?ā€ though.

Funny how some exhibitions you can sell regularly and others not. I have a soft spot for one of my local shows as it was where I sold my very first picture, at the first time of entering. I’ve exhibited there every year since (at least 10) and made only one more sale. However, greetings cards go very well there.

It’s the same for me here. It’s the first exhibition I did, and in the first few years I kept selling my main pieces, but since then it’s just been cards and keyrings. I don’t know if it’s the style (my sold ones did include built up flowers), or just that I underpriced when I started, but with years of no sales there I might as well try something different… I can’t give up on it because I’m on the committee now

I can see why they’d question photo first with yours… mine are nowhere near realistic enough to get that!

Abstract is incredibly hard isn’t it! Sometimes I love it and sometimes I’m attacking the canvas with gesso in a complete huff!

Here’s a new miniature non-abstract from me
