My first job was with a temp agency - I took all sorts of roles, mostly clerical like work study assistant and stock control. I’m sure I was pretty useless at first but I was willing to have a go and learn.
Night all.
My first job was in a basement office in the Civil Service in London. My pay was £90 per month.
Morning all.
My 1st job was for a bank in Greece. They had just bought another bank and they needed lots of people for data entry, to bring the accounts to the new format before they incorporated them in the system. That was 1998, and I was getting 112,000 drachmas per month, which would be around £281 now. That was more than my late mum was earning, so it was a dream job really! Stayed in that bank for 10 years, and went from data entry to IT Help Desk, Procedures Help Desk (that was my favourite) and then to the department creating the procedures.
Here is mine for today x
Morning everyone,
I haven’t stopped working since I was 12 and had a Sunday paperound! Which was followed a year later by a Monday to Saturday paperound. After that I worked in a supermarket on Thurs and Friday night and all day Saturday. Followed by a proper job after art college in a graphic design studio before becoming self employed 40 years ago! Even at school I was selling my work, paintings and according to a diary I found in the attic recently patchwork bags. Why didn’t I do textiles instead of graphics? Anyway, I loved almost every minute of my course and did poster designs for people whilst I was there too. Once self employed I went out during the week to sell at universities and weekends at craft fairs. I took on a small part time job in an art shop after I became self employed and it was so awful I never wanted to work for anyone else ever again. Roll on retirement, I think I’ve earned it…
One sale to add to the tally please Anna @Fififoxi
Congratulations Sarah @dotterypottery for being number 3 on the best sellers list, you were probably there yesterday but I only looked today as I thought I might be in it
Morning all. I have worked since I was 13, started with OCS cleaning a large brewery after school, a van used to drive around to collect us. I literally used to walk in the front door at 4:15 change and straight out the back door at 4:30 back at 7:30. I earned £12 a week which bought a lot of records and fashion clothes . I left home at 15 and got a job in Waring & Gillow a big furnture shop n Cardiff earning £25 a week and used to work both on the shop floor and in the office. Followed by several years in various shops selling everything from shoes to make-up. Finally settled into an office job in 1987 when I met OH and we bought the house in 89 at which point I had 3 jobs on the go. Office Mon-Sat - local Pub 2 evenings and local shop on Sunday
as we needed the money. OH had 2 jobs as well, as when we moved in after using all our savings for the deposit we didn’t have a bean. We lived on beans on toast and anything with potatoes for the first year
.
Good Morning All
I’m on the go early today as I’m visiting friends in Aberdeen. My first job after school was with the British Red Cross in Inverness. I worked as a care assistant in a centre for young folks with disabilities. It was quite the eye opener for me.
I have some wildflowers to share. Have a great day all.
ha ha…Cara @FelstedFleece …love it…
loving all the stories…
OK…advice please.
I had a message through folksy from someone wanting to buy one of my paintings but saying that they were having trouble trying to access the link and could i please tell them the size of the painting
SO…the size is clearly in the bio which makes me wonder is it a possible scam?
I think what worries me a bit is that the message from folksy says that if I reply the potential customer will have access to my email address and that worries me a bit. I HAVE replied but am I right to be wary?
Here is today’s card
.
Sorry @TheHermitsBothy and anyone else who doesn’t like to see a spider!
That does sound a bit dodgy @teabreaks . What link is the person referring to, if they’ve seen the painting but can’t see the size?
When I was a teenager my mum ran a playgroup. She and I started taking orders to make little clothes for the children. I loved earning a little pocket money for the pleasure of making a tiny dress or pair of trousers. I’ve carried on making things but only in the last few years have I returned to selling my creations.
I had a Saturday job in a greengrocer’s which was hard work but enjoyable. When I was a student I had various summer jobs, including working for Barclays Bank, checking signatures on foreign bank documents. It was so boring as most of the time there was nothing to do and we would wait for the Mail man. I was sitting with a chain smoker……
A couple of reusable food covers from me today.
Look out for email claiming to be from paypal, mentioning a payment that has been done but there is a problem with your account and you need to click a link and deposit an x amount to resolve the issue. By knowing your email it doesn’t really mean anything, but they will know how to contact you pretending to be paypal. This particular scam has been going around for a while. I wouldn’t proceed to any transaction outside folksy.
Morning all. It’s fascinating reading about all your jobs, especially working in a kitchen at 8 Cara @FelstedFleece, that is child labour! I started working in Jo Lyon’s cake shop in Boundary Road Hove, that job ignited my love of sasha torte, then a shoe shop in the same road, then onto BHS in Brighton. At 18 I left home and started my therapy radiography training in Southampton. I stayed in the NHS for 40 years.
A relist today as I don’t want to bore you with Christmas cards every day! I have a new exploding box made and hopefully I can list that later.
Thinking of you @islaymaymakes
Brenda @teabreaks, as others have said it does seem dodgy, just keep an eye out for any other emails.
Morning, I didn’t make it back yesterday as the rain decided not to appear so I spent most of the day chopping ‘stuff’ down in the garden. After filling 6 big Ikea bags twice and doing multiple tip runs I feel like I’ve achieved something!
This morning is really dark although no rain yet. Hopefully it’ll stay dry until after lunch as have Optician’s appointment at 12 for me and then youngest right after and we were going to walk there. We both upped our 10k steps a day to 15k steps a day over the Summer school holidays and the 20 minute walk there and the same back would have helped!
Anyway, another bauble set from me today.
Sending love Susie @islamaymakes
Sharon @malloryjournals I’ve pinned your journal as I’ve loved everything in your shop already.
Louise x
thank you, I would never do any sale other than through folksy. Even if a friend wants to buy something, I tell them that it has to be through folksy…x I am super cautious as I know two people who have been scammed and lost a LOT of money…one friend ( in Devon) last week answered a phone call and transferred £50k ( yes K ) to a phone number she was given and followed the instructions… She is sadly NOT online and doesn’t even have a mobile phone, so she had not read about all the scams…
We have to be SOOOOO careful x
Ouch, I hope she got it back!? My friend got scammed out of 4k a few weeks ago over the phone. Apparently the guy was extremely convincing, all the while lecturing her about bank security while getting her to give him her security text code three times! The bank refunded it, thank goodness.
Oh my goodness Brenda @teabreaks - your poor friend. My Brother got scammed in a similar way although it was quite sophisticated and he lost 34K. He managed to claim back 20K though but he still lost a huge sum of money.
Scammers literally make me feel sick!
Yes, I think your person saying they can’t see the measurements may be a scam but not necessarily. (I do have customers contact me through Folksy with problems paying etc) Just be careful for fake e-mails claiming to be from paypal.
I had someone keep messaging me for one of my foxes, so I put them on the waiting list. I saw they were from USA but they said they wanted it shipped to a UK address.
In my order book I marked them down as a possible scam.
When the time came for them to pay, I sent them a paypal invoice and they then sent me a screenshot showing that they had paid it.
I double checked my paypal and there was no payment. I looked more closely at what they had sent me and there were some very tiny discrepencies from a normal paypal invoice and so I blocked them. This was for a total of about £16! It made me wonder how they had the time to keep an eye on my item, message me a few times and then fake a paypal invoice all for a possible £16!
Morning all. I have another busy day today so if I’m not around much don’t worry I’ll be back later (promise).
Well done Sue @SueTrevor on your sale I’ll mambo over to the tally and add it on!
See you later and have a nice day all.
Thanks for that Sue @SueTrevor and congratulations to you being on the best seller’s list too - whoop whoop
