OMG! I just got an email from Dawanda that they are closing the website according to their agreement with Etsy.
Looks like Etsy is killing off competition.
What is their agreement with E*?
(Just so you know, we prefer not to use the full name of other selling platforms in this Forum.)
Probably sold or got bought. Leaves me with one place to shop for handmade stuff. (I’m only using Folksy and my website to sell).
And this basically means that those in E* will be competing with the multitude asian “crafters” who copies lots of things and sells them very cheaply.
I see…do sellers there know that E* has forced their own payment system on sellers? If they don’t want or cannot go with this payment system for various reasons, they will be shown the door. Just like it happened last year when thousands and thousands of international sellers had to close their shop on E*. I would think they found Dw* a good place to sell, based in Europe. And that is not happening now…? I really feel for them and I hope they will be alright.
Small business swallowed up (bought out) but huge business - it’s the same the world over. Either they were making serious losses, or Etsy made them an offer they couldn’t refuse.
I actually hadn’t heard of Dawanda until I’ve seen this info various places online today. It’s a shame, though, for the sellers and buyers who had a platform that they liked - Etsy is getting too big for its boots!
makes me love Folksy even more…lol
The site with no name hasn’t bought out Dawanda or killed it off. I believe there is simply an agreement that sellers can migrate their listings from one to the other so that sellers are not left without a selling platform.
The Site with no name?
Can we just call it voldemort?
The Site in the Invisible Mask?!
I’ve just realised my last reply doesn’t make much sense…I was watching the football!
oh dear
No! That’s A**z*n

Yeah, that’s what it sounds like to me too. Etsy is far from an ideal marketplace for purely handmade sellers but, despite that, it’s still the biggest fish in the pond. DaWanda have at least tried to make it as easy as they can for their dedicated sellers to keep selling somewhere, rather than just flicking the switch and leaving them in the dark.
Look on the plus side germans love handmade items and will pay more for them so there will be more germans looking to buy. I am posting 2 items to Germany this morning so here’s hoping sales pick up. It also means I don’t have to police it anymore looking for my photo’s being used as it was quite bad on there sad to say.
What do you mean “police it” ? You can try using tineye to reverse image search.
If anyone is interested here is an article breaking down why Dawanda is closing
operating losses, decreasing number of shops and lack of growth into non european markets - some of those can probably be indirectly attributed to competition from Etsy but they are by no means killing off or buying up
Dewanda.
Good to know.
Still not going to Etsy as they allow copyright infringement to go on without action.
