Not being too techy, could somebody tell me whether we can post items on there ourselves or do we have to be chosen ,as I see at the top of the F/B page it invites us to "write something on this page"

Yes you can 
Yes you can pop something on there, when you’re their page have a look on the left hand side, you will see a section marked ‘visitor posts’ if you click on there it will show you what others have posted.When you ‘write something on this page’ it goes into the visitor section
