Hi there folks! I’m new to Folksy & I’ve created an account today with the idea of opening a shop. I’d like to know how many listings you get with a basic account. I want to sell hand stitched QR code badges and cross stitch patterns, & I’m wondering whether to go for the basic account or the plus. Any advice is gratefully received!
There is no limit to how many items you can list. If you have a huge amount it just works out cheaper to have the plus account.
Hi, and a warm welcome. I have found everyone to be really friendly on here, I’m a relatively newbie myself.
You get 3 free listings, BUT if your end of month bill is less than £2, then they dont issue a bill, so you can actually list quite a few items before you have to pay! Obviously, if you want a number of items or when things come up for renewal, you will soon go over the £2. Folksy plus, as I understand it , gives you unlimited listings, but it is £7.50 per month, which is actually a lot of listings (18p each) , so it may still be cheaper to have basic. But it does include some other perks too, like online webinars, I believe. Others, who have it,(I don’t ) will tell you more.
If you don’t go for the plus account then make sure you only list with quantity of 1 as you pay listing fee on every one. I see so many new shops opening and setting their quantity to 100 and wonder if they realise they will have to listing fee * 100…oooops
Someone mentioned you don’t pay if your bill is less than £2 at the end of the month but you will have to pay it eventually and you will be charged commssion on anything you sell in addition to your listing fee. And if you don’t sell after 4 months it will cost you again to relist everything.
Really entirely dependant on how many things you want to list. If quite a lot then you should use Plus. Someone has probably done the calculation to work out which is most cost effective but it also needs to take into account whether you actually sell and whether you have to relist.
As for me… I am Plus because i have lots and lots of things in my shop and they are entirely non perishable so doesnt matter if some of them stay there for months and months .
Welcome to Folksy
If you have the basic account you would need to list or relist approx 37 items a month to break even. I started with a basic but as now have over 800 items in my shop would cost approx 160 every 4 months, so the plus is extremely good value.
The shop account becomes payable when the commission on sales reaches £2.00. Best to assume you will need to pay each month but remember if does not need to be paid that month is carried over to the next.
There is an awful lot to be said for constantly adding new things to your shop and not leaving it three months before showing potential customers new things. I have on many occasions sold something immediately after listing ( and of course promoting it on my social media). .
It is hard enough finding customers on Folksy. We need to make it as easy as possible for them.
PS the idea of fiddling and faffing with changing subscriptions like that i find appalling. Put your energies into making beautiful things.
Personally I am surprised that Folksy have not made the plus account a yearly contract regardless whether you pay monthly or annually. Not fair to pay for a month, list the whole shop then cancel and renew after 4 months.
This is a flaw and should be stopped after all those of us that pay for a year have contracted to keep the shop for a year. Different if closing the shop or not worth the money. The £7.50 or annual subscription is worth every penny.
No derogatory replies please. I have not been rude or negative just stating fact. Fair play to plus members who have faith in Folksy. I will not tolerate being bullied because of my opinion.
I agree Caroline @Caroleecrafts …I couldn’t believe that someone would do that…to me that is fiddling the system… and I agree, please no rude or negative replies but that idea of doing the plus for 1 month to get extra listings is unfair on those of us who pay the full fees. I just pay for the year and then forget about it and I have done that for quite a few years now… I am on a low income but I still dig into my pockets to find the fee.
Thank you Brenda.
I pay annually as save money. Have a deposit account with my business banking account. Know have 2 direct debits in January, one for Folksy and the other for Artist Network, squirrel away money each month from my current account balance sales to make sure have that money in January. Forget about it then.
Plus is right for me, list daily, on the Best Seller’s list and sold18 items this month.
If had a basic account would have cost me more than the £6.50 per month for up front sub.
Why would I go down the basic route plus relist the last listing page daily.
Or are you referring to being a plus member for a month cancel that sub and renew in 4 months. Not exactly cricket is it.
I do not consider it the right thing to do, perhaps Folksy should block that loop hole, which would be fairer for those of us that pay for plus. Would never dream of doing that as to me a fraudulent abuse of the Folksy system.
I hope queenstitchqr who started this thread has some answers to her/his question, and hasnt been put off Folksy.
Basic or Plus? Hopefully she/he can now decide what is best for their particular shop, at least to start with.
She asked for advice. It has been freely given which is what happens on Folksy because everyone is helpful and willing to give their time to help people.
I note she had not yet returned to the topic to acknowledge the assistance . .maybe she will let us know what she has decided
Ps I absolutely agree that playing the system like that, taking advantage of the free Plus listing fee is way out of order and wonder if Folksy had realised that that was going on. It also surely means that if the super Featured line is used for the Plus month that will disappear for the other 3 months which must look really odd. mS#iI
As we have said. It entirely depends on how many things you list each month. If only 10 for example then you can list 10 every month and still pay less than the £7.50 for plus for only one month. And you can keep your shop looking fresh with new listings each month and without the faff and hassle of cancelling and changing contracts every few minutes. .
This means, unless my maths is hopelessly wrong you can have 40 listings in your shop, added 10 a month over 4 months and it will cost £1.80 a month. Won’t pay month one as less than £2 so will pay £3 60 at end of month two. And nothing in month 3 but £3 60 again at end of month 4.
Which is a total of £7.20 fees for 40 listings over 4 months. And less than the £7 50 plus for a month then cancel if there are less than 40 listings
You then relist the original 10 in month 5, next 10 in month 6 and pay £3 60 every 2 months as above. Etc etc
If you actually sell something then you will of course pay also commission and you may want to fill the hole in your shop by listing something to replace it. And of course instead of relisting the 10 a month you could replace them with a different 10.
You cannot like all the people all of the time. I have a very close knit group of friends, educated the same, same backgrounds, politics etc and we understand each other so well. Very seldom leave my type of people. Have a friend from my school days we have known each other since age 6 when we were boarders.
Sadly two of my wonderful friends have died in the last two years. One of heart disease. The other meningitis related. I really miss our heart to heart chats. Good long term friends cannot be replaced.
So true Joy
I think your question has already been answered, @queenstitchqr but to put it simply.
There is no limit.
Folksy offers the three options, pay per listing 18p an item (so 10 of the samething would be £1.80)
Or pay Monthly £7.50 and fill your shop with as many items as you like. (You can cancel monthly at any time and revert to paying per item) but will lose the added benifits of being a Plus member
If you are getting plenty of sales then you can always change to yearly £75 which gives you 2 months free and the added benefits of being a Folksy Plus member.
Folksy is a friendly and inclusive site so its whatever suits you, there is no one way for all.
Hope that helps and good luck🍀
Hello again & thank you all for your input. Now that I have some clarity around the issue I can start to plan my shop. I had assumed that with a basic account I would have a limited number of listings. Thanks for clarifying otherwise!
