Welcome to Folksy from me too
I love being on Folksy - it’s a lovely place to have a shop in spite of the lack of sales!
Your comments and observations are bang on the mark. If social media actually worked then there’d be more sales on here. I know it works for some sellers but it should work for everyone who puts the work in, and God knows I do but it’s made little difference for sales on here. I tend to focus on instagram and pinterest and Google as Facebook ads have never worked for me.
Being nice and generous doesn’t sell anything. I remember years ago selling handmade fudge at an artisan market. The stuff was made with fresh cream and butter and was delicious. We put out samples for people and sold the bags at £4 each. What did people do? They ate all the samples, even coming back for more, said the fudge was divine but didn’t buy. So we tried making salted caramel sauce in sealed jars and doubled the price. No samples. The stuff flew off the table. ![]()
We have always been told that the stats don’t include sellers own views and searches if we are signed in but as suspected they obviously do, I have often looked at mine and the search terms are exactly what I have typed into the search bar, I have even tried some really stupid ones and yes they have shown so sadly they don’t really give a very accurate account of how many people are looking at our shops…I suspect recently most of mine are my own because it’s certainly gone quiet.
I’ve just reduced my postage costs and knocked off 10% on my items. Maybe on a few things I should try increasing and see what happens… you never know
I’ve concluded that too now - I’ve been recategorising a lot of items and redoing tags - it does seem that the views are significantly boosted by this. I hadn’t considered before that updating your own shop would affect this but it does appear to which is unnecessarily misleading.
There’s a famous story about Vidal Sassoon when he first started up. He doubled all his prices and because of that people were stupid enough to think he was somehow better than anywhere else and he made a fortune.
