New 'Glass Art' category on Folksy - help us fill it up!

Following a request we’ve added a new category for ‘Glass Art’ on Folksy. You can find it in the ‘Art’ section. Here’s the link folksy.com/art/glass-art

There isn’t anything in it yet, so feel free to fill it up with lovely things! And don’t worry if items don’t appear in it immediately - they will be there once the system does its update.

Does that mean I need to go right through my shop and recaterogise Everything ?

It’s fine to keep things where they are Joy. It really depends how you want them to be categorised. We still have the ‘glass suncatchers’ category. Maybe you could use the bulk recategorise tool to move some items across and see how they do in there?

I’ve redone the first page, excluding jewellery. Not sure where figurative comes in as a sub category. I’ve googled the dictionary definition but it doesn’t help.
Where would I put Spider’s Web, Heart, Dream Catcher for example ?
xx

Maybe I’ll ’ do’ alternate pagefuls. Half then as Art and the other half as glass suncatchers

I can change the sub-categories Joy or add other ones. I wasn’t sure what people would need. With the ‘figurative’ one I was thinking about art related to the human figure, so any items depicting people. But happy to edit/add. Let me know what you need.

I’m currently rewriting my Joysofglass website from scratch as it is developed using out of date tools and soooo difficult to maintain that I don’t. As it is just a ‘photo’ site / pointer to my shop here I’m just adding lots of pictures by colour, size and type and to be honest having difficulty categorising my suncatchers by type but you’ve given me an idea that ‘Imagination’ might work well. I also have ‘hearts’ but romantic works equally well .
Really not sure how much detail anyone would go into searching on category, I would probably only ever search at the top, glass art level.
Thanks for the new category though. It will be interesting to see if the listings in the new category get more attention than those in the old… of course those in the new are all on the front page so likely to anyway

@folksycontent Camilla could you add ‘landscape’ as a sub category please? Thank you. I really need to get on with taking some photos for listing!

Hi Helen. Landscape should be there as an option for you now.

would this category include sea glass?

Hello fellow glasser! I felt glass needed a place under the art category alongside other media. It is a hard one as there is a cross over but I felt I didn’t have anywhere to list my bigger pieces which I would classify as art pieces rather than home decorations. I feel it needs to be recognised as an artistic medium more.

Hello again, could you add 3D under Glass Art please?

Hi Robyn

I’ve been here on Folksy for 10+ years but my main glass is stained, copper foiled though I do have a small 20cm kiln so make jewellery and small pieces, dishes and xmas decorations and the like.

I have to admit to never, ever in 10+ years on Folksy as a buyer and when putting together the odd Folksy Friday pinterest board, used those category menus to search for anything.
I Always just type in the Search field.
So it really makes very little difference to me whether my glass is in the Decorations / Stained glass or the new Art / Glass categories. I honestly would be surprised if it made any difference at all as to how customers find my glass and they do find it.
I do see your point though re your own glass, certainly if you have bigger, arty pieces so good luck with them. xx

Hi Robyn. That’s done for you now. I’ve updated the page descriptions too. Hopefully it’s more clear now what the figurative glass art section is for now @JOYSofGLASS https://folksy.com/art/glass-art/figurative-glass-art

That is great thank you Camilla!

Thanks Camilla. Just as I said, I never use those dropdown category menus but I suppose others do.

Thanks Joy. 10 years is much experience! I agree with you with customers that know you and look for you perhaps, but as a shopper I personally look at drop down menus too, I guess optimizing all areas of search is best. Hopefully this new column will help further.
PS: what is folksy Friday and how do you do it?

Lots of posts here about it. It’s a collection of Folksy things you make for Pinterest. See

Choose a theme and get pinning. Selfishily I always include one of my own pieces in each board I do but only one.

Sorry that url has for some reason not worked well, it’s added characters to my search
. just search Pinterest boards for #folksyfriday.
