Paper Crafters Advice Please

Hello all you lovely Folksy folk,

I am closing my business after 10 great years (and 2 years flogging a dead horse). I have TONS of card that I’d like to sell so I can at least earn some money from that. Most are 12" x 12" but postage on that size is silly money and I think it’ll probably put people off. I’m going to cut them down into more postage friendly sizes and wondered if 6" x 6" or A4 was the best way to go? My gut says 6" x 6" makes more sense but I would love some advice from any of the lovely paper crafters out there please.

If you are adamant about cutting it down, 6x6 is the obvious way to go. However, bear in mind that a lot of papercrafters prefer 12x12 for larger projects or so they can cut it down to whatever size they need.

I wouldn’t personally chop them down. A4 is perfect for card blanks if the gsm is right, but would leave you with lots of weird offcuts. 6x6 will use the whole card, but you’re limiting to buyers that looking for panels. How many gsm are they? Could you make it to 6x6 card blanks instead? I personally buy A4 upwards, as I very often make my own card blanks and do a lot of die cutting.

Thank you. Sorry, I should’ve said its patterned card. Various weights but all card and not paper (200gsm+). I have tons of plain coloured card which is already A4 so will sell that as it is but it’s the patterned card thats 12 x 12.

Maybe try a few sets of both A4 and 6x6 and see which one goes easier. Though not my cup of tea, 6x6 cards are quite popular and can be useful to have ready panels.

Hi Kim,

I think if the right person found something they liked, they’d probably pay the postage to get it but I do understand that at that size, you may be somewhat limited.

Have you considered 6 x 12? (is the postage on that slight more palatable?) The only reason I suggest that is to not only echo the 6x6 card blank comments made above, but it also caters to ‘panels’ for 4x6, 5x7 and obviously 6x6 card sizes.

Good luck whatever you decide to do and sorry to read that the past 2 years have been less ideal.

Not a paper crafter, but I have been de-stashing fabric (selling on eB*y now but originally on Folksy). Maybe some of the things I do are transferable.

I decided to list all the different sizes I can offer, but don’t actually cut until it’s ordered. It can work whether you are selling in bulk or in smaller amounts.

Of course, you end up with the offcuts not the customers, but maybe they can also be sold for small projects. I also sell my offcuts from my sewing as slow stitching kits or scrap bags, and I find these have been very popular.
