Payment Options, Possibly Limiting Sales?

Hi everyone, i am very new here, just started listing last week, adding new items as i go.

Currently, i only use PayPal for payments as that is what i have been used to and used on other sites, but as Folksy may be a different animal, i was wondering if i am risking limiting my sales?

I understand that it is probably common sense to offer as many options as possible and I am sure it couldn’t hurt my sales to have those options, but would be really interested to hear from someone who uses Paypal only and those that use stripe, where are most of your payments coming from?

I hope this was the right place and thank you in advance for all advice.

I use PayPal only now did have Stripe but long story and would never touch them again. Do have sumup for fairs etc and very good.

As PayPal allows the purchaser to use a card without and account do not feel I need anything else.

Hi Wendy,
I stuck with just Paypal for a long time, I’d been using it so long that I just felt comfortable with it and didn’t feel the need for anything else. But then I lost a sale when a customer couldn’t (or maybe wouldn’t) use Paypal, so I gave in and signed up to Stripe and have never had any problem with it (I hope I don’t regret saying that!). I would estimate than 1 in 5 of my sales are paid for through Stripe, maybe I would have got those sales anyway, or maybe not, but I think it helps to give my customers the option.

There is a long thread on here about Stripe I signed up for them, been with them for almost a year then they asked me to prove who I was. I do not have a photo licence or passport and after going through agreeing to have certain documents told them where to go.

They also treated those that had fraudulent sales from cloned cards appallingly. Charging £15 for the privilege and extra if they did not refund. Folksy were very good and helped out at that time.

A lot of ladies I know in the US who have had dealings with them say they are a shower, check out their FB page. Zero customer service etc.

I’m with @plumporridge. I started with PayPal but added the Stripe option, and I would say about the same proportion of my sales are via Stripe now. When I’m selling commissions privately people often don’t want to pay using PayPal, for whatever reason, even if I say I’ll sent them a PayPal Invoice they can use to pay by card. They are more comfortable paying a Stripe invoice.

A small number of shops here had to jump through a few hoops to verify their id with Stripe. I think that is something all banks have to do to some extent, and it is a reasonable ask, and if you have a passport/photo driving licence or equivalent it will not be a problem.

Certainly I have customers who will not buy rather than use PP, so having Stripe as an option is a good thing for me.

I have PayPal & Stripe on here and probably 50/50 as far as sales concerned. I use Sum up at craft fairs and can send an invoice if the others fail to work.

We have both on Folksy most sales seem to be PayPal but no issues with either. Also use Sumup for fairs

Interesting to know you need some sort of photo ID as I was thinking of adding Stripe but I don’t have any so that rules that out.

Really appreciate experience and advice, thank you.

I use both Paypal and Stripe and sales around 50:50 from each. Aware some people have had issues with Stripe but I’ve been ok so far (touch wood) and they’ve not asked me for additional ID, which would be a problem as passport has expired.

They don’t ask everyone for id, just a (presumably) random selection. So why not set it up anyway and deal with that if and when they request it.

Same for me now. Paypal only now, fell out with Stripe! I ended up out of pocket on a couple of occasions through no fault of my own. Wouldn’t touch them again.

I agree Claire they are a shower and sad to see that Folksy are still using them. I thought they were okay until the problems I had. Then read the comments on FB and my problems were mild. The same comments that I made that they are not interested in small business.

If people do not want to use PayPal will always send an invoice through sumUp otherwise a chance I am prepared to take for my own peace of mind.

Just read they are freezing accounts again and hanging onto money.

I use both PayPal and Stripe and (up to now) haven’t had a problem with either. My sales are about 50/50 between the two.

It’s not just Stripe that ask for ID information. We recently opened a new savings account with our bank and had to provide ID - even though we’ve banked with them for ages!

It is something my husband runs in to all of the time as he still has a paper driving license and his passport expired over a decade ago, add to that he is a stubborn bloke its a wonder he gets anything done

I use paypal & stripe, I would 50 / 50 in sales. I use sumup for fairs. I have only ever had 1 problem & that was paypal refusing to accept a card payment from someone.

I use Paypal only now, and have not had any problems. I had Stripe for a few weeks, but no-one used it and I didn’t feel very comfortable with them. Correction, I think I had one sale through Stripe.
