Hello clever people. I have been selling with just Paypal as a payment option, but wondered if anyone had noticed that more people buy from you through Stripe. Also, is it safe? I am slightly hesitant to have something connected to my bank account, but I guess if lots of people use it, then it must be ok? I’m trying to find more options to make it easier for people to pay & then hopefully entice more sales!! Thanks in advance for any helpful info.
I’ve used it from day one, never had any problems and I’d say it’s about 50/50 for me with PayPal and Stripe payments.
I like that Stripe takes my Folksy fees at point of sale, so I know what I get is mine as it were, with PayPal I have to wait for my Folksy invoice.
But with PayPal the money is in my account instantly and with Stripe in can take a week to see it.
I have a separate bank account for my shop so Stripe isn’t connected to my personal bank account, but that is just to make life easier for me.
i have both, not had any issues with Stripe; transactions have gone smoothly and money is in my bank on time. Plus they take the fees out of the final total so no paying back out (You get an invoice from them to let you know what went out)
I’ve used Stripe from day 1 here, also used it on a different selling platform and also use it for doing invoicing for commissions. I’ve never had any issues with it and since I’ve been using it for so long they now transfer my money after 3 days. Like Lynne I have a second bank account that paypal and stripe connect to away from my main bank account. The stripe fees are cheaper than paypal (and if you have overseas customers stripe gives them a better exchange rate than paypal).
Stripe might ask you to verify your ID - they want a scan of an official photo ID (passport or drivers license). That could cause issues if you don’t have either of those items.
I’ve used Stripe from day one too and haven’t had any problems. Quite a lot of my customers seem to use it.
I took a bit of persuading before I signed up to Stripe as I have been selling through Paypal for so long. But am glad I use it now, have never had any problems and it is good to give customers the option.
The majority of my payments are now through Stripe and I have never had any problems. They were also fabulous at responding to a query I had about a possible fraudulent purchase (it wasn’t ).
I’ve been using it since it was introduced here too. Never had any issues and it feels like around half of my sales have come through Stripe. I wouldn’t want to be without it, as although customers can pay via Paypal using a card, I think some of them either don’t realise that or get tied in a knot trying to do it.
Thank you so much everyone. So helpful. Will definitely be setting it up for the new year. Happy Xmas to you all & may 2023 bring you many sales!
I had Stripe for a year, they then asked for photographic proof of whom I was. I have nothing that fits that bill. They then asked for council tax bill, marriage certificate then birth certificate. Sent all of these but not enough, they wanted more at that point after 10 days of backwards and forwards so told them where to go. So Stripe for me would not touch them with a barge poll.
Several US Ladies who did use them have walked away as they were dreadful.
I’ve never had a problem with stripe.
I have had several orders using Stripe, and also use them to send invoices for work sold outside Folksy. Their fees are lower than Paypal and I am now on a 3-day payout period. I have had no problems so far, and it was well worth setting up for me.
I use SumUp for anyone who cannot pay via paypal
I’m considering signing up for Stripe too as I have had a few issues this last month or so with customers not wanting to use Paypal, and have lost a couple of sales. The photo ID would be an issue at the moment though as I need to renew my passport…did everyone have to send photo ID?
The PayPal account login screen that comes up when PayPal is the payment processor has the option for customers to pay using credit and debit cards, so they actually don’t have to have a PayPal account to place orders.
Thanks @PoppyKayDesigns, I know, I have customers who have been doing that for years, but it seems there have been problems when they are using a phone. I have had 2 customers now who haven’t been able use this option when paying on their phone, yet it has been ok when they try again on their computer. So many more people seem to use their phone now I’m just getting the feeling it’s going to more of an issue. I have also has a couple of customers who just didn’t want to go through Paypal at all and cancelled their order…
I didn’t have to have photo id, but I already had a business bank account for several years, so stripe could see I was a “real” business as I was setting up with them.
Thanks @rosesworkshop I don’t have a business bank acount so that may be an isue too then. I just have a seperate current account which I keep for Folksy related stuff.
I had a business account and still do for over 25 years but they would not accept that as proof as to who I was.
Yes, if someone really doesn’t trust PayPal for whatever reason (maybe due to issues in the past) then the guest checkout option might not be enough for them as it’ll still be going through PayPal.
PayPal can also limit how many times a card is used with guest checkout, so it’s fine for the odd payment, but if someone uses it a lot then they might reach that limit.
I had to send a photo of my passport, but it was about 6 months after I signed up. They do see if they can verify it from the information you’ve entered, but if not then they’ll probably ask at some point (not at sign up).
