Paypal postage settings, with a premier account?

Newbie here, just trying to set things up and getting a headache in the process! Maybe someone with the same type of Paypal account can help me out with this bit…

I have an old Paypal account (Premier, rather than Personal, I think, as I see I have Seller Tools and the ability to create invoices etc.). I want to use this account as it is, without upgrading to a business account, if possible. I’m just trying to sort out the Postage & Packaging thing - the “Miscellaneous – Allow transaction-based delivery settings to override profile settings (Optional)” bit.

The only thing I can find regarding shipping on any of the menus is under Seller Tools > Shipping Preferences, where it’s asking me to connect my account to something called Packlink… Is that the same thing? If I don’t connect to Packlink, does that mean Paypal doesn’t try and calculate shipping? Or maybe the option is hidden somewhere else and I just can’t find it!

I’d really appreciate any pearls of wisdom here!

I’m not sure if this helps at all but don’t really understand what you mean about the shipping on paypal, I don’t add any shipping options on paypal. The shipping is set on each item in my Folksy shop, when someone orders they pay for the goods and shipping costs at the same time using their paypal or stripe etc, Paypal don’t calculate anything for postage they just take their fees for the pleasure of using them.

I’m just following Folksy’s guide to setting up Paypal (article linked below), where it says it’s important to check this box to stop Paypal calculating your shipping costs and overriding Folksy’s postage settings:

Postage Settings

  1. Go to your PayPal account settings by clicking on your name in the top right of your Business account homepage.
  2. Click on Account Settings
  3. Scroll down and click on ‘Postage and Packaging’ (left hand side of screen), and then click on ‘Update’ alongside ‘Postage Calculations’. This will take you to your Postal Calculations settings page.
  4. At the bottom of the page it says:
“Miscellaneous – Allow transaction-based delivery settings to override profile settings (Optional)”
You need to check this box, so that PayPal will not interfere with the postage settings stipulated by the service you’re using (Folksy). Make sure you save your changes when you’re finished.

If it’s not a problem then that’s fine, I’d love to stop scratching my head about it!

Most people won’t need to worry about that part. By default your PayPal account should allow Folksy’s postage costs, but it’s when someone has already set specific postage up on their PayPal account (such as for when they use PayPal on their own website and need it to calculate the postage costs) that there can be issues.

You do not want to link to Paclink, that is what eBay uses, and it’s a 3rd party site, where you choose which carrier to use to deliver your item, lot of ebay members complain that they get surcharges after the event, get a bill for extra cost. Stay well clear, as others have said, don’t set up any p&p on PayPal, just set it up on Folksy

Thanks for the info. To be honest I don’t like linking to 3rd parties like that and giving them so much personal info anyway, so I’m glad to stay clear.
