Recommended image sizes - a change to our guidance

We wanted to let you know that we’ve updated the guidance about image sizes. You don’t need to do anything now or change your existing images (unless you want to) but when uploading images in the future, we suggest reading the new recommendations here: Photos, sizing and uploading – Folksy Support & Knowledge Base

This is because:

  1. We’ve increased the size we can display images on Folksy when viewed on desktop, so desktop buyers can now see a higher-quality image.

  2. Press often need high-res images, and although we don’t display images at their maximum resolution on Folksy, if we have high-quality images on our database we can send these directly to journalists.

Most images on Folksy already meet the new recommended sizes, but if you have particularly small images, we would suggest changing these for images that are at least 1000 pixels x 1000 pixels wide, if and when you have time. Don’t worry if you can’t, as images that meet our previous recommended dimensions of 642 x 642 will still display fine on all devices.

Hi Camilla - if you’re approached by the press and a listing doesn’t have an image that’s high enough resolution, would you contact the seller to ask for a larger image?

I have to say, the thought of changing all my images on my listings to larger high-res ones makes me feel a bit faint!! I always work on online images being a small as poss to keep them manageable and quick - so I think probably most of mine would be too low res (which is a pain since the site revamp as most of my images look a bit pants now!) :briefs:

I’ve just tried adding a new listing and it still says the maximum file size is 5MB, but from the guidance, it says it can be up to 10MB now? Mine were only just over 5 and they failed to upload.

I’ve just changed a couple of mine to 1000 x 1000 and worked fine. I’m not going to change all of my pictures already in my shop because I have hundreds but I will do them 1000 x 1000 from now on. Thanks for letting us know.

Yes absolutely! We would always contact the seller to see if a larger image is available. It just makes it a bit more complicated and sometimes if the journalist is on a deadline, a seller might not get back to us in time.

Oh no! I’ve double checked with Aaron and Doug and it seems that images above 5MB can still fail. So we’ve now changed the guidance to recommend images should be 5MB, and warn that images over that size may fail to upload.

Sorry for the confusion.

No worries, thanks for clarifying :slightly_smiling_face:

I don’t know if it’s associated with these changes, but in the last couple of days I have noticed that in some shops (mostly new ones) a lot of the image thumbnails are black and white. When I click on the items, the image comes up full size in colour.
eg in this shop
(redacted, see different example below!)
Could @dougfolksy have a look please?

Should they be quoting their online website shop in their banner ?? Think that’s a nono !

Well you might want to report them for that, @JOYSofGLASS. I’ll pick a different example in the mean time so as not to name and shame…

Just checking - is the image on the “About” section still 700 pixels? Mine needs updating but I don’t want to do it twice.
