I have lots of different items in my shop which I have divided up into collections (I currently have 15 collections - eek). When it comes to the main shop though I am unsure of the best way to order things - should I keep all the products of one type together risking the customer not “seeing” all I do or should I put a few of each thing all mixed together on each page which I feel makes my shop look a bit untidy but at least someone browsing will see examples of everything I make without having to go into each collection. What do others do?
I usually put newer items on the first page, so every time I add something, I move it to the top and it shows first. It does create a block of similar items (that’s the way I work, making batches of similar things) but the page as a whole contains a selection.
I think most people either land on an item page, or look at the collections anyway, so I’m not sure it makes a lot of difference, but I like to keep the first page ‘fresh’.
Since my shop front is the web address on my business cards so where previous customers will hopefully end up I tend to have a random mixture of new and older items on the first page - chosen based on the strength of the photo and my mood at the time. Anything that is particularly seasonal (ie valentines heart stuff) tends to get bumped up to the top in the run up and then buried towards the bottom after the event.
When I list, or relist, that ‘new’ item gets moved to the top
i organise them into the same categories on screen as to what collections they appear in so if somebody is looking for a particular type of card, they can see them together on the main shop as well as being able to click the collections. this way they can browse sections in two ways. i like the idea of similar items being together.
I put the seasonal items at the top usually.
For new items i have a new items collection.
I originally listed my items in categories such as handmade cards, watercolours etc but recently reorganised some into themes e.g. mothers day mixing pictures and cards. My sales have increased this month. Not sure if this is the reason but could be.

Thanks for posting this, it has made me thinking about making my front page tidier. It now has more colourful, eye catching items on it. I have loads of collections but I don’t sort appearance by these.
I only sell two types of items, candles and wax melts so its super easy for me to organise and display, but when I’m looking at other shops I think its good to see a good variety of items on the front page, especially if they’re all neatly organised
Roz, I also take into consideration that on a computer there are 4 items in a row, but on my phone there are only 2, so I tend to pair things up, but also coordinate them so when you scroll down î kinda makes sense too, either by colour or design.
Well that is what I think I do, but…others may have a different opinion!

I was just about to start a new thread asking this very question, so have resurrected this one instead!
I like to change my shop front around quite regularly so that it looks different and fresh if the same customers come back regularly, but I do struggle with how best to showcase them. I have tried with having the same items together in rows eg. all purses together then all make up bags, then all handbags etc. I have also had it going down in columns so that the first row will have one each of say a purse, make up bag, handbag and tote bag with the same type of item following on underneath. I’ve tried with just 1 row of each type, so a row of purses, then a row of make up bags, then a row of handbags, then a row of oven gloves, then I repeat them again.
Currently, it’a bit random as I have tried to put different items that are made in the same fabric together across the row, thinking that someone buying a tote bag may buy a matching make up bag or purse to go with it. However, the little bit of OCD in me doesn’t really like the randomness!
New items I tend to ‘Feature’ at the top as ‘New this week’.
When shopping, how do you like to see items? Would I be better sticking with having all the purses together etc.?
Ha ha Kim @KBCreations - my good intentions that resulted in my posting this question sadly didnt last too long - its currently very random! Really must put some time aside to sort it out again
I’m full of good intentions too…but need more hours in the day and days in the week to complete them all!!!
I think I am going to have to re-jig my shop again, not liking it at the moment!
