… and didn’t see my newly added vegan spoon… so I clicked on the ‘find more gifts for vegans’ and still didn’t see my item even after much scrolling… THEN I realised that the clicky link ‘find more gifts for vegans’ pulls out the tag ‘vegans’ (plural) NOT the singular ‘vegan’ that is on the list of daily themes.
So I typed ‘vegan’ in the search box and hey presto, my item appeared.
My point being that the tag search doesn’t automatically include plurals so I need to go and tag all my vegan items with ‘vegans’ as well. Ditto presumably for any other singular nouns that I may have used as tags.
Can anyone tell me whether this is true in the other direction too - so if I tag an item ‘vegans’ will it come up if someone types ‘vegan’ in the search box?
It depends, a tag page is different to the search. If you put “vegans” in the search box, then your items that are only tagged “vegan” do come up in the results (I filtered to the kitchen category to make it easier to check they were there).
The search page will be looking for matches to what you type, but will allow for things like plurals and typos so it won’t always be an exact match (but something that doesn’t match exactly might be further down the results than something that does).
A tag page is what you see if you click on a tag in a listing or are looking at theme of the day, and this does only include items that have the exact tag you’re looking for (so if you’re looking at the “vegan” tag page it won’t include any items that are only tagged “vegans”).
Some of the gift guides link to a tag page, some of them link to a search page, for the vegan one it’s a search page so your items will be included, but they obviously must be quite far down the results if you don’t use the filter (you can tell which it is because the link is folksy. com/search rather than folksy. com/tags)
Thank you, that’s very helpful, I’m still trying to wrap my brain around how the tags work on here! So the search will automatically pluralise a search term but a tag page will only contain items with that exact tag. I think I’ve got it now!
