Ive taken a break from crafting, not made anything for 3 months, but Im getting back into sewing. Making items for myself so theres no pressure to try to sell them.
Im lacking motivation seeing as The Sewing Bee programmes isn’t on this year, that usually gets me wanting to make a whole new wardrobe.
I do have a couple of ideas, but thought it may be nice to start a thread to show what clothes you are making for yourself.
Lets see what you are making.
To get the ball rolling, here is a skirt I made last year.

Me too! There’s nothing quite like taking scissors to a pair of jeans (or your husband’s shirt).

What a clever pair you are, @SamanthaStanley and @PoisonedAppleJewellery! I’m always having to alter things because I’m short, but when I try and make things without a pattern , they’re usually a disaster! I’m about to make myself a lined jacket for the summer using a pattern marked “average” difficulty. I feel a bit daunted because it has so many different pieces and I don’t even know what half of them are…

The best advice is to make a “toile” or a test garment to the pattern measurements out of cheap fabric then you can tweak the fit using the toile and making notes as you go. In this way you can get your final garment to fit really well and look great on. It also helps when the instructions in the pattern aren’t that clear because you can feel confident just to try it and if it doesn’t work out then you haven’t spoiled your good fabric.

I thought of making it first in cheap fabric, then I thought “I’ll have spent all this time on it and I won’t wear it because the fabric won’t be what I wanted”. I’m very impatient
Thanks for the advice though, Sam.
What I need is one of those adjustable mannequins, but I don’t have the money or the space…
Or what I’d like even more is for shops to stock things that I like!

I’d like one of those mannequins too, but they’re not essential. The important thing is to know what your own body shape is and then you can get a feel of how you need to alter the pattern. With the cheap fabric, the usual advice is to use calico, but I normally use a lower priced fashion fabric like cotton voile so if it goes well I can wear both garments. I have made dresses in lining fabric so that when I come to make the actual dress then I’ve already got a lining ready to sew to the facings.

I often use old sheets to make a pattern for he first time (even occasionally used old curtain linings if the pattern needed a heavier fabric) and I have frequently worn my practice pieces. I once made my daughter a sundress out of what we think was a tablecloth (I ‘inherited’ a whole lot of old fabric when my Dad’s uncle died and they were emptying his bungalow)

I have made a little dress for my 3 month old granddaughter, does that count?
The fabric is chambray with glittery cats faces on. The buttons are sparkly too…

@PoisonedAppleJewellery Yes…I was just chilling after work, watching a sewing show and thought I would send the picture in and see if they showed it and they did…I resisted buying the machine…or even the fat quarters!!

Well done for resisting, Ive watched that channel for years and only bought 2 things from it.
Now you can say your work has been on TV.

, but it won’t be back until next year
