SumUp online

I use SumUp card reader at shows and brilliant, they are a UK company and now offering remote usage for sites etc.

As UK based has Folksy thought to ask them if they could replace Stripe.

I use Sumup as well and really like their app setup and they pay within a couple of days, not a week like Stripe.

I also use a SumUp card reader and I’m really pleased with their whole set-up.

Thank you Jennie and Helen.

I like them as UK based and understand how we work over here plus know what they will accept for validation as they understand our paperwork. I found having a business bank account seemed enough for them, plus they can check the electoral roll etc as most UK business have subs to that site.

I’m all for looking into possible replacements for stripe but having looked at sumup’s website what they are offering is for people to open an online shop with them, they are not offering the ability to embed code into an existing website or market place thus allowing them to process the payments in the same way that stripe or paypal do. It doesn’t mean that they won’t develop the appropriate API in the future but they haven’t got there yet.

I understand not yet ready for here but ideal if someone specifically won’t use PayPal as they can be sent a link to pay by card.

I joined Stripe early last year with no problems now they are asking for validation. I went through hoops to give them the alternatives they asked for but the list kept growing. Do not have any of the photo id’s and was not going to lay out for one when such a small percentage of my sales went through them.

Their reviews made the decision easy for me to walk away.

Most of the other card reader companies (izettle and square are the other ones that spring to mind) allow you to do remote invoicing (just like stripe and paypal). So if someone is having issues with a customer not being prepared to use paypal and doesn’t have stripe for what ever reason (I know some people have been put off by the recent fraud issue as well as not being able to or wanting to go through the verification process) then it might be worth investigating their options with their current card reader company before setting up an account with sumup.

I have been with SumUp since they opened and they are brilliant just need to find out if I can add a note at the top announcement of my shop on here. As with the new options can send a link for customer to pay SumUp direct.

You can add/ amend your shop announcement from your dasboard - you need to look in the shop settings tab (under the shop settings heading on the left hand side). I’d put a message a long the lines of ‘if you are having problems checking out with paypal please use the link at the bottom of the check out page and I will send you a sumup invoice instead’

I’ve had a bad experience with sumup - I had a card reader with them some years ago but they suddenly stopped supporting it (ie it stopped processing payments) when they introduced a new version - and they did this at the end of November in the midst of christmas market season so it was very inconvenient. There was no warning that this was going to happen and it caught a reasonable number of people by surprise.
