Variations - selling to the USA

Hey, I currently only sell to the UK but am considering opening up to selling to the USA as well. However, I currently offer delivery upgrades for UK sellers under variations. If someone buys from the US, would they see the delivery options for the UK buyers? I offer paid upgrades for 1st class signed for and next day delivery but obviously that’s not an option for a US buyer. Thanks, Mandie

I’m pretty sure that any buyer would see whatever you have on the listing as a variation - I don’t think the system is one that recognises where someone’s browsing from.

I don’t offer variations myself this way so may be talking tosh, but I wonder if you could just add another variation that’s worded as a US delivery upgrade?

Hi Debbie, yes I was thinking that, to maybe change the wording to say if you’re from the UK choose below, if from the US then choose that option (in better words than that!), especially as there will be a set postage fee for USA. Thank you!

Personally I just put in the tracked price for my US shipping on everything worth more than £15 and don’t give the option for non-tracked, although these days it’s all ridiculously expensive. I’ve found with US buyers that there’s a real expectation for tracked shipping as standard too - in my other shop, they’re always bemused and slightly outraged when something’s delayed over the holidays and I say “no, you didn’t choose to add tracking in the cart” :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: Strangely, although they’re used to much higher domestic shipping costs than we are and so aren’t as shocked at the price of tracked, they mostly opt for the lower cost non tracked when given the option.

Having said all that, in 11 years of regularly shipping to the US with RM (mostly non-tracked) only 1 or 2 things have genuinely gone missing. The RM service is generally very fast and I never use the Signed option when I use tracked as that tends to inconvenience the buyer.

I offer post upgrades to UK under variations, but mark them clearly as UK only as I also send overseas. This is typical of one of my listings where you can see post upgrades on the variations:

It looks like you do what I do Sarah and set your US delivery for the tracked service automatically?

That’s great, thank you Sarah. So do your US customers choose standard delivery under delivery options (as in I guess with variations the customers have to choose one option)?

Yes, I send pretty much everything with tracking as standard to be honest - UK and definitely all overseas orders. Both for my customer’s peace of mind, but for mine too! :slightly_smiling_face:

Yes, I used to sell the US years ago, then stopped after the big price increase from the RM after covid. Must admit I never had a problem with goods going missing, so it did work well and yes, it’s good they don’t mind the high cost of delivery! I was going to do tracked/signed but maybe tracked only might be better

Yes, they just have the standard overseas option to choose when they check out in the Folksy cart - the upgrades in the variations are marked just as UK options only, so it’s clear that overseas orders can’t be upgraded further. I send absolutely everything overseas by International Tracked (or Int Tracked & Signed) as standard, so customers (and me) have tracking on their order. :slightly_smiling_face:

Perfect, thank you x

Sorry, yes, overseas customers would choose the ‘Standard Delivery’ option in my variations
