Weekly Art Chat W/C 12th May

How exciting! Have a wonderful day Margaret.

Nothing new from me yet today, so here’s an oldie - one of my favourite mini oil paintings

I am SOOOOOOOO jealous Margaret…Such a brilliant artist and he looks like such a nice man too…
Stephie…that is fab, love the colours…
Waving Hazel…

Very quiet in here today, I’ve had a break from coding and a sit outside in the sunshine - did a bit weeding, quite therapeutic

Just looked at my website stats and someone searched for Hazel Rayfield Poppies … That’s me, I do love painting poppies so I thought I might show one here

I’m back! Here’s the painting I did today under Terry’s tuition:

It’s OK, but nothing special. Terry is fun, but I got a little tired of his jokes very quickly. If we’d taken out his jokes and the time he spent trying to flog us his new book we’d have been there quite a lot less time. The idea of having the scene already drawn is a good idea in some ways, but as he showed us step by step how to paint it, I was reminded a little of painting by numbers. There was little room for personal interpretation, we just had to paint it exactly like he said. He actually painted a little of this one as he was showing me how it’s to be done.

The man next to me had been to eight of Terry’s previous workshops so he’s clearly very popular, but I’ve experienced one now, I’d rather spend my money on a variety of different tutors than going back to the same one over and over.

I bought his sampler set of six brushes and some Bockingford rough paper which we used for this and which I liked.

Overall it was a fun day out and far better than going to work!

"Have you noticed our shops have appeared next to our names? Mine’s not showing, is that because I’m me? "

Some shops have their link next to their name and others don’t. I don’t understand why it’s so random about who has the link and who doesn’t…

I know Margaret, I noticed that yesterday when I wanted to contact a few of you…I had to do yours a different way…lol…very confusing.
Lovely painting…was it drawn out for you then?..I would hate that…I like to be different and to do my own thing…that wouldn’t suit me at all.
I remember going to pottery classes and being told that I had to make a coil pot. I told the teacher that I did that in infant school and I wanted to make a fairy house. She told me that SHE was the teacher…I told HER that I was the one PAYING…and I made a fairy house…ha ha…
I like to be shown techniques and to have a teacher that I can ask if I need to know something but NOT to tell me that I have to paint a pink house or a blue car etc…NOOOOO…
Glad you enjoyed it though.
Waving Emma…( @Emma Curtis Design) keep forgetting to say Hi…we are not ignoring you…thank you for popping in to say Hi.
Helen that is beautiful too…very pretty.
Waving Gaynor, Max, (where’s my cake) and Hazel and Stephie…where’s Trevor?? is he sunning himself somewhere?
Been out on another hospital appointment for hubby…blood pressure is down again, so no extra tablets for him, thank goodness.

Glad you had a fun day and your picture is beautiful but I think you paint great pictures anyway Margaret, your flowers from the other day were amazing  good to get the experience of going to workshops though and it’s fun trying new things too

I’m starting to need a painting fix but no studio time for me this week and we have things in at the weekend so not sure when I’ll be firing up the irons next … Been having a little play with my pen again … It’s fun too

Yes Brenda the drawing was already done for us. I don’t think his workshops would suit you, you’re too much of a rebel. You’d probably want to paint a purple house with glitter in the trees!

I got a bit bored with the painting after a while, it wasn’t an exciting subject matter. I think possibly I have very high expectations and this didn’t really either stretch or interest me too much. Not like Judith’s snowy sheep workshop, that was exciting and we were encouraged to express ourselves which wasn’t easy today.

Hehe Margaret you’ve been spoilt with Judith - she’s the best tutor I’ve ever seen in action (and I have seen a few, we have one or two a term at my art club and my old art club that I don’t go to anymore had one a month).

Your painting is lovely and you’ve had a good day. Did he use his proprietary greens or did he have you mixing them?

Lovely poppies Hazel. It’s good to enjoy some time in the sun. I’ve just discovered I have low vit D and low calcium - I have to see the Doc about it next week - meanwhile I need to make an effort to get out in the sun with bare arms.

Helen that’s a lovely seashore piece.

Waving Emma, nice to have you along for the ride

I did three sketches today in town. Two were from photos, after the market stall that I was sketching got packed up early - hurrumph! Luckily the one next door was still going so I borrowed a person from his stall instead. I’ll take pics tomorrow morning when the sun’s in the right place for my photo setup.

Drat I didn’t mean to delete that post!

Yes Stephie we had to use his greens and the brushes he told us to. Judith was by far the best tutor I 've been to by far!

That’s a pain Margaret, although at least you got to try them out. You must have thought his brushes were worth trying at home - what was it about them that appealed? I’ve never used them.

ha ha Margaret, you know me so well…lol…yes there is a rebel streak in me…comes from such a strict upbringing…now I can do what I want…and if anyone queries it…I can claim old age…lol.
In some ways, I am glad that you went to his class because IF he ever came to Wales, it would save me wasting my money…
I would love a class like Judith’s because it is more free flowing…allows people to experiment but with some guidance and help to express themselves. I like Terry’s work but I don’t want to paint HIS pictures, I want to paint MINE…(and yes PURPLE trees are good…lol)
Crossed Stephie…
I bought his small golden leaf brush last week and I have to say it is super and I love it…

That’s the first time I’ve noticed the shop name appearing! I wonder why its there for some and not others then?? Lovely pictures (as always!!)

I was interested in reading your comments Margaret, and found them helpful as I have been asked to run a workshop next year (it’ll be my first). I must remember not to be too rigid with the design, but maybe just provide a basic design which I can teach and then let everyone embellish it as they see fit!

I’m kind of sad that our real names have gone, I found them useful.

Textile I’ve only run a couple of workshops so am no expert, but my biggest tips are be flexible, speak clearly and slowly -a lot more slowly than you might think - and repeat everything at least 3 times before you let the class loose!

Stephie, I bought the brushes because they are of excellent quality and hold lots of paint. The selection I bought consists of smallish brushes including a half rigger and a medium detail brush I found useful. I also liked the fan brushes and the foliage brush of his.

The great thing about Judith’s classes is that she taught techniques for us to use in own own way rather than with Terry it was more about how to paint like him, which is a completely different way of teaching. I don’t want to paint like Terry. I want to paint like me but learn how to do it better and with more skill.

Glad to have been of help Heidi, although all students are different and some seem to like slavishly following detailed instructions, others like me want to learn how to develop my own style. From what I heard today, for some it’s just a day out and a chance to meet people. There are so many different reasons for people to attend workshops, it’s very difficult for a tutor to cater for them all.

Morning waving hi to everyone. Didn’t get back here yesterday went to vist Dad who’s had another hospital stay only a few days due to an infection, he’s back home now and back to his usual self  Glad you enjoyed your class Margaret, hopefully you gained some knowledge of techniques to use on your own.

I have some ideas to try this weekend, involving magnets  and I’ve some ACEO’s to finish off, with Dad being ill again and work issues I just haven’t had time to finish anything off this week, sigh! at least now I have seen the new structure in work and there are a couple of jobs that look interesting though I’m not sure yet if I will get any choice in the matter or if they will just put me where they need me most. There is one job that sounds interesting in Business Intelligence, lots of reasearch, graphs and generating ideas for improvement which is right up my street!
