Weekly art chat w/c 19 May

Morning Jeanie, it looks bigger unframed for some reason. I prefer the unframed version personally, I think the ornateness of the frame takes the eye away from the detail in the painting, though it does look cute.

Yes! you have a point there Margaret, thanks for your comment!! appreciated!

I prefer the unframed, too, but it’s nice to see it in both forms, because you can see it as a traditional painting, or as a more contemporary one just by changing the frame!
Waving to all!

Just done that , had this frame handy so tried it!
Is it better now. ladies?..thanks for your opinions! The background is a cream colour!

Yes, I think that shows it off much better as a painting, the space around it makes the painting itself stand out so much more, but this frame probably wouldn’t suit a traditional dolls house, so it does depend a lot on the way a collector chooses to display it. It’s an interesting experiment, using different frames to show it off in different ways!

perhaps in your listings you could show it displayed in different ways which could appeal to a greater range of collectors?

No! this size isn’t meant for doll’s houses.
It is for anyone who collects miniature paintings. I have this size on display at my craft fairs, as not all my customers own doll’s houses.
It is fun to try different frames isn’t it?

I’ve just listed a tram!

Fab tram Pam, it reminds me a little of the trains in Switzerland, though it’s a long time since I was there.

Thanks, Margaret! The Lisbon trams are great - they had to keep the old ones as they were the only ones small enough to go up the winding streets to the castle. Most of the trams are modern, but Tram 28 and Tram 12 are over 100 years old!

Very pretty work Jeanie, I think that’s my favourite of all the ones I’ve seen from you. I prefer it unframed too. If you’re going to keep it in the second frame, I’d move it up so that there’s more like twice as much space below as above - when I’ve seen them in galleries in overlong frames that’s more or less how they’ve done it. Although personally I think the frame’s the wrong colour for the painting.

Ooh Pam I like that tram! Good choice of colours.

I got some new atelier interative paints today. I’ve only had a brief chance to play, but I think we’re going to get along like a house on fire  they’re so yummy and blendable. Thanks Tessa for recommending them to me! I also got a monarch acrylic fan blending brush…and I have to say I’m not impressed. Once it’s wet the fan goes into points and is useless for blending. I’ll give it another go but I think I might be contacting the SAA for a refund as it’s not fit for purpose.

And my brusho has arrived! HUZZAH! Major playtime lined up for tomorrow.

I got my copy of Artists and Illustrators magazine today and there was a very interesting article on cadmium.
As a self taught artist the only things I know about are what I have learnt from dvd’s and art books…of course none of these have ever said anything about possible problems from cadmium…to me cadmium was just a word on a tube of paint. (hated Chemistry at school)…
The last time I was taught anything was at school in the days of powder paints and huge bristle brushes…(not like the art lessons today)
SO…if I had no idea about possible health issues etc…it made me wonder just how many hundreds of people like me have been washing their brushes in the sink and possibly pouring dangerous chemicals down there. NOT that I could think of any alternative. …
Apparently the EU wants to ban the use of Cadmium in paints
Just wondered if any of you have opinions or views on this…it is about time we had a good discussion…lol

I didn’t realise that cadmium paints actually had real cadmium in them. Surely there are modern pigments that are non toxic?

I just found this very scary thread over on wet canvas

Hi ladies. Back from hols in the Algarve where I have been using the desert paints.
Stephie, glad u like the Atelier paints. You can do so much with them.
You’ll enjoy Brusho. they are fun but I don’t think they are as colourfast as they make out. I did some colourfast tests on them once and I am running some more tests on them this time to compare with W&N watercolours and FW inks. I will put the results on my blog.

Re cadmium don’t lick your brushes or let kids use them. I don’t wash brushes in my kitchen sink nor tip paint water down there. It’s a heavy metal like mercury tho not as toxic.(I did chemistry A level that’s how I know)
I don’t use them much as I have other yellows for w/c.
For oils tho there is nothing as good colourwise available.

PS If it says cadmium hue on the tube it contains an alternative to cadmium and is cheaper.
