Hermes v Royal Mail

Hi @ChartLaneEnamels Sorry, I’m not sure if they do a monthly free. I think you can buy the odd daily collection etc, but they’re not cheap

I haven’t read all the comments in this thread so apologies if I am doubling up on what has already been said. I used MyHermes a few times a while back without a problem. I have reservations though about the way they seem to subcontract to local delivery drivers who I heard somewhere are poorly paid and indeed only for successful deliveries. That would account for the delivery method of one of their chaps a few weeks ago who, while I was out, lobbed a parcel over my 6ft high side gate. Trouble is, it contained a large number of my ceramics which were being returned to me after a promotion. Needless to say, there was little in the box that could be salvaged. So I am sticking with RM, I buy postage online which means that I can with minimum fuss check delivery status etc and I feel more confident that the posties at the other end handle deliveries responsibly.

Just to offer a trackable alternative for those of you with higher value items, I used MyHermes once and my delivery got lost, I had to remake the order and chose to send via UPS, they offer a similar drop off point system but for around £2 more will collect from your door.

I have had no issues with UPS and can view all the tracking information online but I also receive emails from them as well.

Money Saving Expert website, who seem a pretty sensible lot, do a survey each year to find the best courier companies. I know it might not be the most scientific survey, but I have to say, personally, I agree with their findings. Yodel are shocking and Royal Mail and DPD are my favourites too. Absolutely love DPD and their 1 hour time slot, I’ve never looked into sending items with them though, so not sure if you’re paying for that level of service.

For large bulky items up to 10 kilos Parcelforce are really competitive at the moment.
They’ve always got offers on and are always cheaper online than advertised on the Royal Mail website, plus their dimensions are much more generous than My Hermes.

I recently sent a 6 kilo box for £13.30, which was not only delivered the very next day but also included up to £100 compensation and a signature as standard.

Have received more items through DPD in recent months and they do seem pretty effecient so far. And the great thing is that you can see what delivery number the driver is at and what number you are. You are given his/her name as well. So if your number is skipped you could immediately contact the vendor.
