I’ve checked all my listings, I’ve read the Folksy blog and followed it to the letter, I’ve re done all my titles, descriptions and tags as per instruction.
Despite all that most of my items are only found after scrolling about 15 pages and let’s face it, no one wants to do that.
I’ve dropped my prices to a more competitive price and only charging for materials where possible, just to try and generate some interest on my cards.
I don’t use FB as I just can’t seem to get my head around it.
I am on Instagram and I post quite regularly and have a few followers on there who seem to like what I make but apart from one regular customer my sales are none existent.
How can anyone sell if their products are not being seen?
I do understand that people are worrying about money, I know I am myself, so I don’t really expect sales on my paintings, but surely everyone needs a card sometimes?
Sorry for the moan, just sometimes I wonder what is the point if I’m not being seen.
Cards are one of the most flooded markets sadly. Plus the pig ones are dirt cheap. I have along standing customer base off of Folksy and do very well with them with cards. They always want something that cannot be found in the shops.
Join in the daily challenge on the forum, you have to click on the links of those participating, visit their item on the shop and heart. They in turn will do the same for you. This helps you keep nearer the top in searches.
Join Facebook groups and promote. I do this daily, yes it takes time but can pay off.
I don’t think the blog has been updated yet with what works best for the new search algorithm because it is still being tweaked however from what I have seen from using it you need to put your top key word/ phrase at the beginning of the title. So for your cards I would imagine that would be something like ‘blank card’ or ‘blank greetings card’, by having the word card at the very end of the title the search algorithm will rank you quite low.
I’ve seen no evidence that having lots of favourites on an item like Caroline is describing bumps you up in the new search algorithm on Folksy (it can help on other sites)
Thank you, I don’t use FB I can’t get my head around it, I guess not being good at social media isn’t a good thing any more.
I’ll have a look on the daily challenge thread.
Thanks for you reply.
Thank you.
I’ve tried several different titles, tried Blank as the first word, tried greeting as the first, tried card as the first and every other combination I could think of, I don’t need to make a living from it thankfully, but it’s still very frustrating.
As @SashaGarrett says, the search is still in progress and is going to be reviewed at the end of the month, so there is a chance that things mentioned now could change in a couple of weeks.
Try to think of what you put in the search bar when you’re looking to buy something though and use this to help with writing your titles and tags. Obviously you need to include words like card and it’s good to have it near the front, but also remember that’s a very general search and there are going to be thousands of results, so getting to the top of a search like “blank card” is going to be difficult.
When I’m searching for a card, I’ll often look for a specific theme of something the recipient likes, so my instinct would be to start the titles with things like “floral card”, “blank flower card” or “sweet pea card”.
Also, if someone is looking for a birthday card they’re more likely to search “birthday card” than just “birthday”, so it may be better to have the phrase as a tag rather than the single word.
Favourites don’t make a difference to where items place in the search results (new or old), but there is a “popular right now” section on the home page which shows items that have been recently favourited, so taking part in the daily challenge can help your items show up there.
Thank you.
I did try and think what would I search for as like you I would search a specific design such as ‘floral card’ or ‘cute card’ or such.
I think I’m on the right track with that, as for the algorithms I will be patient and see what comes in the future. Thanks again for your reply
I’m pretty hopeless on social media but Facebook is not so bad once you get used to it and is probably the nicest one to use as opposed to Instagram. Pinterest is also quite nice and perhaps the easiest to get to grips with. Social Media is very important as you need to ‘generate’ your own sales on Folksy (on Etsy they do more for you but it is a bigger business and you do get rather lost amongst the crowd). Unfortunately there are also a lot of people creating lovely ‘cards and paintings’ on Folksy so you are in a competitive field and with so much choice customers can be overwhelmed. Folksy really scores on being very friendly and a great place for advice - you learn so much on Folksy. I think you have to be patient and use this time to refine your shop, create new products and learn more about how to get seen and sell online. It is a tough world out there and I think everyone’s finding sales hard to come by - it may pick up as we get closer to Christmas. Good luck.
When I type in Stained Glass the first three pages are all the same seller. She has Glass in her shop name at the very front of her name. So, clearly this seems to be influencing things at the moment. Perhaps this will change, who knows. But dedicated buyers will search a good few pages through, I know I do.
When I type that in I am Nowhere at all though I have Lots and Lots of stained glass in my shop …and Glass in my shop name only 7 characters along … But if I type in
Suncatcher… I appear on the second page … .
So all swings and roundabouts. I think …
I doubt it makes much difference to my sales either way which I dont think usually come via search in the Folksy search box … Far more likely coming from Google or Pinterest or my own SM promotion.
PS and if I type Stained Glass Suncatcher in full…woopeeeeeeee I’m everywhere
I hope people do come from the Folksy search, I know I bought from Folksy years ago, just searching for something particular, but times are changing I know that and for me I think social media is maybe a push too far, I really don’t understand FB, wouldn’t know what to search for for a group and am rubbish at selling myself despite coming from a successful sales background
I do like Instagram and get a few ‘views’ from there but I guess I either need to get with the social media trend or get out as it were.
Kind of like go SM or go home…… having said that my brother has a very successful hand made business albeit a very niche product, they rarely do any SM
Sorry for the waffle, just musing I guess.
P.S if I search ‘hand painted greeting card’ I’m all over it
