Hi guys, I’m very new here and could go with some extra pair of eyes on this. I just want to make sure I’m doing the right things and can get some sales soon.
I’ve activated google analytics but am very new to online marketing ! If you could share some tips and tricks that might have helped you with your business, that would be helpful!
Also I would really appreciate If you could please have a look at my shop, images, titles, description etc., rate them and suggest what can be improved.
Wow these look very intricate! Welcome to Folksy, I hope you do well here.
My first thought was ‘will the eggs get damaged in the post’ - in your about section you cover this but if someone clicks on the listing itself, it would be good to read something within the body of the listing too, as not everyone will read everything in your shop before deciding whether to buy or browse on elsewhere.
There’s a such a raft of good advice here in the forums on photos, driving traffic via search etc etc and also in the blogs, so my greatest tip is that it’s worth spending a good three or four hours just reading through and making notes as you go along.
My initial feedback is to include more information in your description, size how items are shipped, how they can be personalised. In your tags you could include short phrases such as new baby gift basket. Also some of your pictures are a bit blurry and you can’t see the detail on some of your close-ups
I’ll second what Max has said - you need more info in your description. I was told to write your descriptions as if describing the item to a blind person as search bots (ie google) can’t see the pictures, I looked at several of your descriptions and there is no mention of it being a carved egg (info not in the title either) nor dimensions, if the base or a stand is included, how it is shipped. I also dislike the watermarks being over the main part of the image as it obscures the details, off set towards one corner would be less distracting.
There is masses of info on the folksy blog about writing descriptions and how to use social media to market your shop
Hi Heldi
Thanks for looking at the shop and for your advise. Should I add info about packaging on each listing, u reckon?
That does make sense !
Yeah you’re right ! I only made this shop yesterday and still finding my feet around here. I’ve never marketed it on social media either and new to all this. I know nothing about online marketing and promotion ! I’m going to look up more posts and topics on this forums as u advised! Thanks hun xx

Thanks Max. Sure will add more to my discription and tags !
So details like ‘packaged in secure cardboard boxes, inserted with foam and bubble wrap for extra potaction’ And ‘ships via Royal Mail 1st class’ work?
Ooo thanks Sasha ! I never even though of the points u mentioned, they didn’t occur to me! I’m going to fix that, remove watermarks and get clearer pictures next week!
Really got me thinking of how to improve my description when u used the analogy to a blind man! You guys are awesome!
Thank you !
welcome to Folksy…everyone here is lovely and there is always someone to help with any queries.
Your work is beautiful but I couldn’t see the pictures very clearly and also your watermark was right across the picture which made the viewing even more difficult. I know with paintings etc it is good to have the watermark but I doubt if anyone could possibly copy your eggs, so personally, I would remove them. Good luck with your shop and don’t be despondent if it takes a while to get sales, I waited over 3 months for my first sale and now have over 400.x
On the subject of watermarks someone who knows more about image manipulation that I do told me that they are actually easy to remove so a better way of marking the image is to include a business card or branded packaging as they are more difficult to crop out!
Lots of good advice already - my 1st thoughts are, remove the watermark as you can’t see the product at all, add more info in the description, state if the base included, add dimensions, and change your titles to something which customers are likely to search for, so ‘Pink carved goose egg basket’ instead of ‘Pretty in pink!’ for example. I’d have a look on the Folksy blog, there’s lots of info on there about how to write descriptions, titles, tags etc
Don’t apply a watermark to the photo instead take the photo with a business card propped up against the egg stand or the egg nestled in your packaging showing your logo on the lid. That way the business name/ logo is an intrinsic part of the photo rather than something that has been applied after.
Something like this
Lovely makes. You need to improve the photos though as it looks like these are not sharp and does not look consistent.
If you are keen on keeping your watermark, move it to the side and make it smaller so your buyer can fully appreciate your creation.
Use the same crop, a square, landscape or portrait for every product image. The whole shop looks better if the crop is consistent. Ditch the black border.
The advantage with small makes is you can create a backdrop/set-up. Whether you like plain sweeping background or a lifestyle kind of shot. I suggest using a dark colour background to highlight the pale colours of your makes. Black, dark blue, dark grey, burgundy…
if you do not have off camera flash or studio light, try window light. Put a white sheet on the opposite side to reflect light on the other side of your product.
If you want your product to show up on image search, add the description on the metadata if you are familiar with it. If not, it’s okay, just make sure you name your photos properly, something like… pink_lace_eggshell_ornament.jpg
No, you cannot add metadata on images on Folksy. You have to add it using a photo editing software like Lightroom. Then export the image to include the metadata then upload it as your product image.
Also, I notice the Folksy diminishes the images size quiet drastically. To keep the sharpness, export your images at 72dpi.
