Thanks so much Francesca - hmm, not sure I’d want to do that unfortunately, so I guess I’m just going to have to put up with it. Fingers crossed it starts to leave me alone soon. I just wish IG had better controls for this (especially if the setting so that only your followers can message you doesn’t work!). 
I’m starting to move away from social media and back to/focussing on my newsletter and blog. If the basic functions of ‘only people who follow me can message me’ functions on an app run by a company as experienced as Meta doesn’t work, then I think we can assume it’s down hill from here. There is just no excuse for spam and especially not explicit content spam.

Maybe the originator IS a follower on IG? If so, your filter will still allow them in.
I havent had any dms but i do get the odd shirtless lass following me. I always check new followers and these babies get blasted by a block immediately. No idea if theyre real or bots, dont care tbh, i just block. Im trigger happy so the slightest sniff of a dodgy damsel or porny percy, and i block immediately.

It’s weird, I don’t get any messages like this, not even in my ‘hidden requests’. Maybe it’s more a problem on the app? I use a laptop, so my messages have barely any functionality at all at the best of times (because they want people to use the app). All I ever get is:

All the messages are coming from people that definitely don’t follow me - and they’re from different accounts each time. It is very weird - I’ve checked that the app is completely up to date, I use IG on both my phone and (predominantly) on PC. They just seem to be getting straight into my inbox each time somehow.
I’m just hoping I’m going to have to ride this out in the hope that the algorithm/settings/app/site/whatever catches up and my inbox can be squeaky clean and less, erm, gynaecological, again.

If you’ve definitely got your settings so that only your followers can message you and these accounts aren’t following you, it sounds like Instagram is glitching. If you aren’t already, go into the Meta help centre and file a support ticket or whatever their equivalent is (report the individual messages too so there’s a digital trail, if you’re not already). If Insta doesn’t respond, try deactivating the account and then reactivating - I think that’s something you can do without deleting. It sounds like Insta has a bug and maybe a total reset on your end might help.

I have only had them recently and up to now they just land in my hidden requests but yesterday I typed something like ‘teddy bear’ in the IG search facility and the grid that came up had one picture of a woman with a top up over her breasts and legs open (without wanting to sound crude)…certainly didnt fit with the rest of the page. I don’t think IG and FB giants give two hoots to be honest, someone told me they got rid of their manual workers that dealt with this and replaced them with bots. Unfortunately sex sells so these accounts are no doubt bringing the money in. Before long IG will be as bad as FB.
