OK odd question for the forum I know… but I’m constantly getting really graphic messages through my IG account which is horrible. It’s like a couple of times a day. Every time I delete the message but I don’t know how to stop them coming through in the first place. They’re putting me off my lunch!
Does anyone know if there’s a way of blocking them from sending to me? They’re always group messages with lots of other people tagged.
I can’t bear to see anymore people without their vest and undercrackers on!
Go into Insta, click on the 3 lines you can then alter what you get through.
I suggest that each time you get something like this block the sender.
To block porn posts on Instagram, you can use the built-in “Sensitive Content Control” feature in your settings, which allows you to adjust the amount of potentially sensitive content you see in your feed, Explore tab, and search results; you can also block specific accounts directly by going to their profile and selecting “Block” if you encounter explicit content from them;additionally, setting your account to private can help control who sees your posts.
Thanks Caroline - I’ve been blocking but it’s a bit like whack-a-mole!
I’m not seeing it on my feed, just in private messages. I don’t want to set the account to private as it’s my business one, but I’ve changed the message settings so that I can no longer be added to group chats unless it’s from someone I follow. No idea if that will work or not. They always seem to be group messages so it might help…
I’ve had a look at changing the sensitive content control - and i’ve changed that from Standard to Less - although that just seems to apply to posts, reels and hashtags so not sure if that will make a difference!
If you’re not already, make sure that before you delete the message, you report the account that started the group message (maybe wash out your eyeballs after). Just deleting the message, I have learnt the hard way, doesn’t report the account.
(It’s also maybe worth mentioning that a lot of the accounts are using photos harvested from elsewhere, so if reporting the OG account for spam, nudity or fraud doesn’t work, report for pretending to be someone else.)
i don’t know if this is relevent in your case… but a border collie friend of mine (well, his owner) used to hashtag “balls” ( because her dog was obsessed), and she was INUNDATED with porn spam as a result.
maybe you’ve used a dodgy tag too and they’ve targeted you that way?
I have just started getting them through this past week or two they go into my message requests and hidden messages on instagram not my main message area, i tried reporting them but the report button wasn’t there. One woman is very graphic, I have deleted the same woman 4 times but every day it’s back. I had nothing until the past couple of weeks, next time i might try replying with 2 words. Annoys me that these get through then when we comment too many times on Ig " thats lovely" we get banned for a few days.
I was on a facebook crafting group and porn posts kept coming up. Admin seem to let all and sundry join, so I left. I run several facebook groups myself and you can spot the trolls a mile away and ban them before they even hit the board. Lazy moderation.
I am admin of a very large ladies group, they have to apply to join and always check other groups they are in, along with checking their time lines. Had one not accepted by me, kept posting junk for sale, warning then out.
Luckily the other members do report anything not right.
I was put in one of those instagram messages on Thursday I think, the block button wasn’t there as it was 8 people in it, so when I went to see the members in the conversation I was able to block them one by one. I reported the chat as well, but will look into the setting of receiving mails only from people who follow my page, thanks for that tip. It was the first one I got, but it was scary that in a couple of hours of not having been online there were so many messages with so many links… I instantly thought what if I don’t log in for a couple of days?
I’ve found that when I’m away (sometimes for weeks) by the time I get back, those messages are from long-defunct accounts because someone else who was added to a group message or spammed has reported the account, chat and/or blocked the account. I think a lot of Meta’s filtering system is automated but I’m fairly sure that if enough people report an account for spam and the system knows that the spam accounts aren’t even following the accounts that they’re spamming, the accounts are blocked or banned fairly quickly because it’s just so obvious it’s trolling or fraud.
I also found a setting for group chats that might be useful. You can can chose for people who follow you to be able to add you to group chats, instead of everybody. I found this limitation quite useful, as it was a group chat that I was added on.
Thanks so much everyone - I must admit, it’s been really noticeable in the last couple of weeks for me too, so with a bit of luck the IG bots will start picking up on some of these accounts. (I can only hope!)
As far as I know I’ve never used any ambiguous hashtags… unless #handmade has a second meaning I hadn’t considered! Good thinking though, I’ll definitely think about that - although I’m using fewer and fewer hashtags on IG now as they’re pretty worthless these days unfortunately.
It’ll be interesting to see what changing my settings does, so that only my followers can message me - with a bit of luck that will knock it on the head (no euphemism intended).
Thankfully I don’t see porn on my feed, it always comes through as a message: so at least I can scroll the feed without seeing ladies without their vests on.
Interesting what you said about comments @PoppyKayDesigns - I remember I used to get comments all the time that were obviously spam bots. I’ve not seen that quite so much of late.
But honestly, the combination of bots and AI makes social media an even scarier place these days. Mind you, having seen the emails Superdrug were sending out last week for Valentine’s Day (full of dildos), it feels like the world is going bonkers.
No way Superdrug !! It use to be chocolates, teddy bears or flowers.,
I remember watching on an old gogglebox clip from one of the morning tv shows the one with Holly in and they actually did a feature on sex toys. I was really shocked, they had a lady dressed in bedroom wear telling us which were the best to buy, it was for Valentines. I’m not a prude but when it’s on a main tv channel mid morning I think it’s wrong, in fact I get totally fed up of seeing it on TV full stop, they seem to think all we want is to watch other people in the bedroom.
So an update… I set my sensitive content setting to ‘less’, which is the lowest it will go it seems. I’ve set it so that only my page followers can message me… and STILL I’m getting these awful messages, pretty much daily. I report and block, but I just wish I didn’t get them in the first place, they’re so graphic
If anyone has any other ideas I can try that would be great - I’m starting to flinch when I see a message pop on on IG now
I think the only way might just be to stop letting people message you at all. I’ve noticed I get spam in waves, so you might just be in a particular bot’s remit for the moment (which isn’t helpful but it might peter out soon).
