Hello! I’m an ever hopeful newbie that this will be a good platform to raise awareness of my products that I make. However, I am wondering if there is a list of rules of what can or cannot be sold.
1-- Most of what I make is hand made, and that’s the core of my business. However I’ve had a call for garment work (ie I buy jackets or shirts etc and do embroidery and other embellishments on them). I sell a lot of these at events, or make to order. But truthfully, I’d like to have some free reign and make some items up and sell them to the wider public (eg here). But not sure if the embellishment part satisfies the “handmade” category even though I’m not making the item that I’m decorating?
2-- Is there any way to best sell my bespoke makes on here? The pricing can’t be one price fits all, so it’s more a “this is what I can make, so get in touch with your requirments”. I usually sell on my facebook page, or word of mouth. But again, trying to cast the net a little wider.
Im aware of a couple of sellers who do something similar. One recycles items, the other hand stitches her designs into new items such as baby towels. The embroidery is your craft. I dont know anything about selling textiles and any labeling or info you need to include but im sure someone else might know. Do a Folksy Search Upcycled and youll see a variety of items that have been recrafted
Hello and welcome to Folksy! If you’re not sure about whether you can sell something here or not, you could always drop an email to support@folksy.com and ask them, they are very helpful!
@SewWhatinScotland Yes, what you describe here is allowed as you’re adding your own original design through a craft. We don’t require that every single part of an item is handmade by the seller, for example painters can use bought canvases to paint on, screen printers can use bought t-shirts to add their design to, pyrographers can use bought wooden boxes to burn their design on… the bought garments are just like your canvas.
Unfortunately we don’t currently have a simple system for custom orders when the price can vary. If there’s something you can set a price for by restricting the options (for example an artist might be able to list a portrait of one pet at a certain size, because by being specific about some things they they can work out a general price in advance), you could list that as a custom item, with photos of previous examples as the listing photos. You could then also mention in the listing that if anyone wants something different, they can contact you for a price.
You can also put a note in your shop announcement and about section to say you accept custom orders, letting people know they can use the contact button to let you know the requirements and get a price (and once you’ve got the details worked out, you can create a listing for them to make the payment). You could also use your shop banner or about photo to have an image that includes examples of previous work you’ve done.
