Microsoft is Founding member of Alliance of Open Media , the community behind the AVIF format, so yes they do support it, you just have to find out how and where.
AVIF is supported in Windows 10 and Windows 11 by downloading the free AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft app store. The AV1 Video Extension enables the viewing of AVIF still images in a variety of apps, such as: File Explorer (thumbnails, file metadata, and preview of AVIF images) Photos.8 Nov 2023
Ah question⦠renaming photos ā¦how do i do that ? When I entered the Folksy exhibition i thought i had renamed them as required, (i swiped to the info of each photo and gave them a title or new name) but once uploaded they had the original number etc on them, I emailed support and Camilla sorted them for me.
For future reference how do I do this please ?
The issue comes if you want to download an image from your shop. On Microsoft devices they download as .Avif.
I donāt store on Google. That means I avoid security problems as I back everything up to my dedicated removable hard drives. I do as you do and take lots of pics, chose the best and delete the rest . After listing I delete all but the one I chose as best. That is my stock file and remains for ever on my computer file showing when made and when and how sold.
I have done this happily for 15 years. The system works . Or it did until some time ago when I wanted to list something in my Folksy shop elsewhere and went to download photos 2-10 to add to the one I had saved. That was when I found they were all unnamed and uselessly .Avif.
No warning was given. The original carefully named .jpgs I had loaded had gone ā¦to be replaced with uselssness really.
Sorry Joy I am still a little lost but itās starting to go in ⦠I have a laptop as well and my photos are stored on there, I admit they should be backed up more often than I remember to do it, I do have copies on removable usb thingies of my patterns, kits etc and the first 5 years or so of photos are also on disks but I like them on Google as well then I can access them from any machine as I have a mixture of microsoft and apple and after losing hundreds a few years ago I like to think they will be safe with Google, the card in my old tablet became corrupt and I lost everything that wasnāt backed up.
As I use photos stored in google for Folksy, socials etc am I right in presuming they are all jpeg files and the only time i would need to convert them would be if I was trying to upload from a Folksy listing.
Sadly Joy nothing we can do about it. Despite having the experience as sellers both on and offline our convenience is not considered. With over 950 items in my shop just causes me a lot of work.
Debby we all do things the way is best for ourselves
Iāve been doing this for 15 years now. Iāve sold 4351 things (donāt believe the 4349 ⦠I just sold 2 pieces to a multi repeat customer, first sale here in 3 weeks).
I have developed processes over time which work for me. The introduction of Avif does not work for me and was a very nasty and unnecessary surprise and remains a big irritation.
I had a laptop stolen once from our motorhome. It had 6 weeks of Eastern Europe travel photos on it. Astonishingly i did get the photos back, though compressed somewhat as the Peter from Slovakia who bought my laptop (unknowing that it was stolen and we believe him) found my email on the laptop and contacted me. He couldnt afford to send the laptop back but he downloaded all the data and sent it me on DVD (that long ago ).
In the first instance it taught me to build a well labelled structure for all my data and to keep it in a single top level folder so if i ever had to tell someone again where my data was i could simply say in the āMY DATAā folder.
In the second instance I am now super neurotic about securing everything and back up onto two separate WD Passport hard drives. They are the size of a phone and undoubtedly each hold about 1000 times as much data as the computer which belonged to the Port of London Authority for which I wrote multiple computer systems in the 1970s
I donāt use the USB dongles as they have no recycle bin option so if you accidentally delete a folder it is Gone !
I can google too : Limited Browser Compatibility: Not all browsers fully support the AVIF format yet. High Processing Requirements: Encoding and decoding AVIF images demand significant computing power. Software Compatibility Issues: Many popular image editing tools do not yet have native support for AVIF.8 Sept 2024
And more interesting. :::Does this mean that our .Avif images have not been properly identified until August this year ??
[Updated] Google Search adds support for AVIF images, making the format OK to use in WordPress
WordPress 6.5 added support for the AVIF image format, but Google Search didnāt support AVIF. However, on August 30, 2024, Google officially announced support for AVIF images, making the format okay for WordPress sites that want images to appear in Google.
I do try to keep things backed up but can go months without doing my photos especially as they are now with Google as well. This has urged me to do a back up of them all on the laptop again, apparantly we have an external hard drive as well so will download to the laptop then onto the hard drive (i just asked hubby about backing up again).
I remember you mentioned the loss of your photos when your laptop was stolen on a similar thread, it was amazing that they found their way back.
When we were in Krakow in August we were quite close to where Peter of Slovakia lived. Should have called in and introduced ourselves. Mind you he knew what we looked like.
I Always back the laptop up before we go away. Whether leaving it at home or taking it away. The desktop too as Bob keeps all our finances on there.
Iām currently doing an exercise going through all our digital family photos (10 million I should think as well as the tins of old photos which I am scanning in using the flatbed scanner right beside me now and plugged into my laptop. .
Bob had an 80th party earlier this year and i took formal photos of all the family ,. in family groups, generatinon groups etc. Now trying to put together a big Salt family photo book but obviously need other photos to fill in.
We are away in the caravan a few nights next week so in the dark nights as i wonāt be editing glass photos and listing things I plan to get the book on the way.
Then have to order 3 copies for his children and 7 more for his grandchildren. Thatās their Xmas presents all sorted
This is all gobblygook to me. I just about understand the word Google but jpg and avif etc are a foreign language!! I just take photos on my phone. If I need them on my lap top I email them to myself and then save on the laptop from there.
However, reading through this thread it strikes me it is a bit like this:
Imagine you have lots of stuff (actual not virtual) you are putting into storage and you pay Joe Bloggs Storage Co to keep it for you. To store it in his warehouse it is all put into 4 foot wide crates that fit perfectly on his shelves. You then decide you want to store some of it with Fred Smith Storage Company. He however uses 3 foot crates to fit on his shelves and the 4 foot ones wont fit .Yes, it will be a hassle to swap everything into different storage crates , but it is hardly Joe Bloggsās problem nor responsibility, is it ? Or have I grossly misunderstood!
Apologies if this is not helpful, but it is just how my simple mind saw it.
I rename the photos on my laptop by right clicking and hitting rename. I select all the photos for a particular piece and select them all at once so they all get the same name with a (nn) suffix.
Canāt screen snip that rename button but itās on the right click menu
That sounds lovely Joy, a mammoth task but so worth it to have all those memories together. I made my inlaws a scrapbook before I started Bearlescent with photos of all of their families, then added little cross stitch and embroidered pieces etc, I spent around 6 months making it, we now have it and itās become the family heirloom to be passed down. I usually have all my photos printed over Christmas for the previous year, one of each item I have made plus my personal ones but last year didnt get time to sort them so of course I now I have 2 years to do (3 if I donāt get them done again this year I have a photo printer and for the first 3 or 4 years of Bearlescent I use to print one photo of each bear as I made it, then filed it in an album. The printer eventually packed up and it was a year before I bought another one but never got back into doing it. Like you I have thousands of photos, I took them all out of their albums a few years ago to save room and put them into photo storage boxes, it took a long time but they are now neatly stored and labelled.
Hope you manage to get a bit done whilst you are away, they will make lovely Christmas gifts for the family.
The problem is that for years and years all photos were stored in Joe Smithās warehouse as . Jpg with the original name too or possibly the listing name instead at some point.
Then Joe Bloggs decided to store the photos in a completely different way and converted them all to the new format ā¦rather like taking each one and wrapping it in a brown paper bag sealed with glue so you canāt see it easily get inside to see what is in each package⦠ā¦but without giving any notice, warning at all that this was about to happen or any mention of the technical difficulties which might arise,or the extra time which would be needed to handle your storage items.
So yes Joe Bloggs could well have been more careful of the impact this might have on his customers and at least have given them notice so they could take appropriate action in good time ⦠to say take a download of the images while they are still in a workable format,if the customer felt they wanted to do that .
