Stripe card payments!

Hi everyone, total newbie to the online sellers craft market here. Is Stripe a nightmare? I’m having real probs with them sending very mixed messages…one minute log in, next verify, next too many attempts to log in (had only done it once)
I went through the verification but now apparently they need to call but are in the US… all seems weird for a UK based Folksy.
I’d love some feedback and any other tips for a new seller!
Cheers
Ziggy

Sorry you are having problems with Stripe. I had similar trying to verify who I was, gave up in the end and only use PayPal. I sent the. So many options as requested but as no photo id, had to give up. Had a lot of US friends from another site who warned me to avoid them.

Hope you have more success.

Thanks! I’ll see if they call and what they have to say. Otherwise paypal will have to do!

Also I see you are in Hampshire so hello neighbour!
How does Folksy go for you? I’ve done lots of real life markets but had a real struggle trying to choose which one to set up online. Asked a few people who had never heard of Folksy but set that up anyway as I liked the UK not massed produced element, but am reading people don’t have much success on here (after I paid £75…)

You are not far from me Ziggy. We are in Lindford and used to go to Midhurst quite a bit.

Folksy was a slow start for me Ziggy. Here about 10 years now. Over the years have got a good lot of repeat customers, they keep coming back which is good as must like what they see. I am into vintage, shabby chic and Victorian style. Up to 570 sales so far and most of those have been in the last 5 years.

Fabulous, I’ll stick with it then!

Hi Ziggy, welcome to Folksy

If you can persevere with setting up Stripe, I would say go for it. Probably half of all my sales come through Stripe.

Love your squash box, looking forward to reading more about you and seeing your shop full with lovely items. Don’t forget to fill out your “About Me” section and link your social media accounts too.

I haven’t had any issues with Stripe, they do take a fee just like paypal however many people prefer Stripe, (or so I’m told), I would say payments are fairly equal, about 50/50 paypal/stripe. It’s worth mentioning on your shop somewhere that you do not need to have a paypal account to pay using paypal, customers only have to scroll down on the paypal front page and pay with a credit card, I think some people are put off because they think they have to have a pp account.

I’ve never had any issues with stripe and would definitely recommend having it if you can get it sorted. Approximately half of my sales are via stripe.
Welcome to Folksy

Stripe also have lower fees than PayPal so definitely worth setting up if you can face persevering with it. I remember it being simple to set up but that was quite a few years ago now so the setting up admin may well have changed.

Started okay then after a year asked me for photo identification. No passport or photo driving licence etc. they asked for council tax bill, birth and marriage certificates, kept moving the goal posts. Had a business bank account but as not a UK company they do not have access to the same details such as SumUp. In the end told them where to go as felt they could not be trusted not to clone my details elsewhere.

As a British company we should be using a UK based credit platform. There are enough of them about. We champion made in the UK then use an American payment platform. Spoke to our bank manager at the time and he advised me to avoid. Would not tell me why though.

If someone has a problem paying, either send them a PayPal or SumUp invoice.

Thank you very much x

I had problems at first because I didn’t have a valid u.k. passport. Someone from American made an appointment for a telephone call. All sorted and I haven’t had any problems since.
Hope this helps. Them speaking to you personally is normal practice for them.

I opened a Stripe account in 2019 as needed it for my other shopping platforms. Never had a moment’s problem with it and I use it for 4 different shops, 3 platforms including this one.
AND fees are considerably cheaper than Paypal.
