Ive been using stripe for several years, across multiple platforms and for invoicing and have never had any issues with it. Because I’ve been using it regularly and for so long they automatically pay the money into my bank account after 3 days (it starts at a 7 day pay out). It works out cheaper than paypal but they take Folksy’s commission at point of sale so it can look like it is more expensive. If you have international buyers stripe gives them a better exchange rate than paypal.
Stripe might ask for a scan of official ID (passport or drivers license) so if you don’t have either of those items you could have issues. (Given recent changes to the US anti money laundering laws it is more likely that you will be asked to prove your ID)
What are your concerns about stripe?
Hi many thanks for your reply…
I don’t send overseas so I didn’t think it was worth all the information they need? I’m really not happy about providing photo/passport ID over the internet either?? I think I’ll stick with Etsy they seem more more straight forward…
Thank you so much again for the information
I use Folksy without Stripe just PayPal. Had one customer did not want to use PP but as have SumUp a UK company, hence opened an account with them with no problems, sent them an
Invoice through SumUp.
I had to go through hoops to try to prove who I was with Stripe, after birth cert, marriage certificate and more told them where to go. Then last year ended up with a debt against me which was not mine stressful. May be nothing but bearing in Mind all the stuff I sent them to prove identity, did wonder.
As Caroline said you can use Folksy with just paypal. If you go for the standalone paypal route there are certain facilities that won’t be available to your customers (google pay for example) but your shop will work fine (there is a shop I regularly buy from that it just paypal).
(As for Etsy - go onto their forums and search ‘Plaid’. At the moment US sellers are having to reverify their bank accounts because Etsy hadn’t done it thoroughly enough to meet current legal standards. Etsy opted to use a company (Plaid) to do the reverification and Plaid has just settled a class action lawsuit payout for selling their users data. No word yet as to whether UK shops will have to go through the same process once all the US shops have been processed.)
Many companies that handle payments (including Etsy and PayPal) can ask for confirmation of your identity as part of the global regulations to help prevent things like fraud. They might not always ask everyone, they might not ask immediately after you sign up, but they can ask at some point as part of their checks.
I’ve done it with Stripe, and I’ve also had it with someone else - I think it Etsy, but it was so long ago I can’t really remember the specifics (as I have a passport it’s never been much hassle for me).
But as Sasha says, you don’t need to use Stripe to sell on Folksy, that’s just an optional extra for if you want to offer your customers more payment options. It’s fine to just use PayPal, and if you’ve already been using PayPal for many years, they might not be as likely to ask for verification as if you signed up to a new account (with Stripe or any others).
I use stripe and PayPal with no issues so far. I also use Sum up for fairs so have the backup of being able to send an invoice if the others fail.
I use Folksy with both PayPal and Stripe, I’ve never been asked for photo ID so far, but it wouldn’t worry me if they asked for it, it’s no different to sending anything over the internet, any and all information could be hacked or misused really and I doubt Stripe are going to risk their reputation by not handling anyones data securely.
As others have said, you can have a successful shop here without using Stripe anyway so I don’t see the problem, if you don’t want to risk using Stripe just don’t set it up.
Hi, I am looking for help/advice please.
I just take payments here by PayPal, but have been notified by Folksy, I could have a potential sale/customer who doesn’t do PP and could I follow up.
I read your reply above @Caroleecrafts and you say you send a sum up receipt, in these cases, and as I have just got a sum up machine for fairs, I wondered how you do it, as I presumed the customer would have to be present to do the transaction?
Thanks in advance.
Judy.
Sign into the SumUp app. Select invoices, new invoice. You then add customer, item etc and follow the instructions on the app. The invoice is then emailed to the customer by Stripe. Once payment received mark as paid on Folksy and proceed as normal.
Thank you so much Caroline @Caroleecrafts I will try this, and let you know how I get on.
Judy
Caroline @Caroleecrafts thank you again for all your help and instructions, that worked very well, and I am very happy to know I have another way when PP is not an option.
Have a lovely weekend.
Judy
Unfortunately I don’t have any ID except for a carers card from local council. I don’t drive neither do I fly either.
Used to have a provisional but ran out when start of covid came in. And now you have to have a passport to get one of those. Which is handy yo get in and out of concert venues.
