I’m fairly new to Folksy and still getting my head round the forums so hope I’m doing this correctly! I crochet items from reclaimed, recycled and secondhand yarn. I would love to find others who are upcycling etc, particularly as I’m going to have a go at doing a Folksy Friday & Pinterest boards on these themes. I couldn’t find an existing thread on this. I haven’t worked out how to get the full shop link image come up in these posts but here are just a couple of the things listed in my shop:
Good luck with your shop! The forums are a great place to get help & advice. Other than using re-cycled wadding in some of my makes I don’t tend to do any upcycling at the moment. However when doing my Folksy Friday boards I tend to just type my search term in the search box on Folksy main page and see what comes up! It’s a great way to find new sellers and lovely items.
Welcome to Folksy! We use some recycled materials (our styrofoam balls inside our Christmas pieces are ones we save from landfill) but a lot of the time we just aim to be low/zero waste.
Echoing what Lou mentioned, Folksy Fridays are a great way to find sellers you wouldn’t normally come across- I do the same, type a keyword into the search bar and get browsing. The site is so big with an array of sellers, many get missed, so it’s lots of fun to explore!
I use vintage fabric and vintage wool blankets as a base for most of my needle felted pictures. I try not to use any new packaging materials - most of it is sourced within my family from parcels they have received. I also work mainly use wool fibre which is recyclable and sustainable. I must own up to only using yarn purchased from charity shops or purchased from someone doing a destash at car boot sales. It means all my knitting and crochet is usually a one off or sometimes two if its a big ball! Here’s my latest make, a knitted tea cosy from a hank of wool yarn purchased from a charity shop for £1.50 and it will make at least 4 tea cosies!
Lovely hats! I love recycling and reinventing things. Am very new to Folksy. A lot of my makes are from vintage or recycled fabrics. I also use tiny offcuts of fabric for my earrings. This necklace used to be a dress
Hi Alison and welcome to Folksy.
As I use fabric for my creations I find there are inevitably off cuts, even with careful placement, so I use these to make fabric collages which can be used in a variety of ways.
I use a lot of reclaimed curtain fabric and denim from old jeans in my makes. Nothing more exciting than finding a large pair of non-stretch jeans at the car boot sale
Thanks Annie. Having received a few replies now I’m thinking one week I might do a ‘shops that use some recycled materials in the process’ (not very catchy but I’ll think of something better😂). It’s good to encourage potential customers to think about these things.
Thank you. Lovely, adding you to my list as sounds perfect. I’ve got lots of scrap material that threatens to be things but I’m not as good at sewing as yarn crafts.
Beautiful and great ideas. I mentioned further up I might do a board one week of shops that use some recycled/reclaimed materials as part of their process, so these would definitely fit with that .
