Worry about showing work space

This is what my desk looks like most of the time!

I made the file size smaller but that hasn’t had any effect on the cobwebs…

Here’s my work space, it looks tidy because I have just moved and spent two days unpacking everything. The things on the table are for listing, when I have taken the photos. It won’t be tidy for long.

This took me 3 days to sort. Its all my bits of fabric, not quite a fat quarter, not quite a fat eighth, and scraps. I can’t stop looking at it and my brain is on overdrive with ideas of what to make. I even showed it to my hubby, (lovely dear), he’s not really interested in my lovely fabric.

Our workspace is an old computer desk in my business partner’s outhouse. I’d love a proper workshop room but it isn’t going to happen living in a 1 bed flat. We have to regularly ā€œde-spiderā€ the bench before doing any soldering or saw piercing. We also found we had a hedgehog hibernating under the bench (completely adorable!). I do the polishing on my lap in the living room, it doesn’t make our products any less professional than those who have a dedicated craft room. I’d happily show a picture of me and Nicola bundled up in hats and scarfs against the cold so that people can see what we deal with to bring our art and our passion to Folksy in these early stages of our business.

While we’re on the subject I am totally making a chest of draws sized one of these during the summer holidays so that I can finally ditch the computer desk! https://www.facebook.com/ArtesantoVivianeMagalhaes/videos/484231051780887/

These posts have made me realise how resourseful everyone is, producing beautiful items in a limited space. Well done to you all.
Before I moved I worked on my 1 yard square kitchen table, and I had to get everything out every time I wanted to sew and put it away again before food was cooked so my fabric didn’t smell of food.

@VioletJewellery That wardrobe/ storage unit/ work station is amazing - please show us your cut down version when you have made it. My work bench used to be 2 office desks rescued from a skip and converted for me by my father in law (whenever I want a new or differently shaped bench peg I draw him a doodle and he makes it up for me, bless him, even though it takes the standard size ones from cookson and the like), I’ll have to show him that video.

My workspace rather depends on what I am making. I have a store room which is the back half of what used to be our garage where all my makes are stored between craft fairs along with all my tables/display units and gazebo for fairs and shelves for things I don’t use very often. Then I have my conservatory where I have a dedicated photography area, shelving/boxes for all my wool and a workbench where I do all my sewing/small item making in the summer. In the winter my sewing machine moves into the dining room as the conservatory is generally too cold. Then if I am making scarves or larger pieces of felt I use my kitchen counter/cooker hob covered with pieces of hardboard so the area is long enough…then of course if there is something good on TV I sometimes set up a table in front of my armchair/sofa and work from there! Think it would be hard to encompass all of my work area in one photograph!

I will definitely post mine when it’s made. I worked out I can do it from two large sheets of 12mm mdf, a length of 1X2 pine and two piano hinges. Gotta love being a technology teacher

After seeing some of the photos posted here, I won’t be too embarrassed to show my messy ā€œcorner of the bedroomā€ work space…

Hi! I use our dinning room table as my work space but in the spring/summer love to work outside in the garden! I have a very useful shelf trolley with wheels that stores my supplies and tools so that I can quickly tidy the dinning room table if we have guests for dinner! :sunny: Here is a photo taken last summer in our garden!

I love this too Joy! Please please use it and we could use it on the front page as a banner too!

Ok I’ll wait though until a better light day for an improved shot and maybe move the fan heater which is a no-no for a work space containing glass. I have a horror of tripping over something and falling into a crate full of glass sheets - the crates usually therefore have lids on !

I love seeing all the photos of work spaces! I thought I would have a tidy up this morning, when I’m jewellery making the table is covered with silver wire, beads, tools etc! I love working in the dinning room as I have a good view of the garden. I do love to be outside though! Looking forward to the Spring :tulip:
Here is a photo of my new tidy workspace!

I think we can all relate to the discomfort felt when our work spaces have to go on show. It’s still fascinating though, I too love to see other folks studios and crafty kitchen tables etc. A while ago when I needed to show my studio, I got around it by tidying a bit of my work bench area and concentrated the camera on the view outside as well as the painting equipment inside. The sunshine helped LOL.

I took the camera to the garage yesterday hopeful of catching some elusive sunshine shining through the glass I was soldering. Sunshine not playing but I used the camera anyway. nHere are a few pictures.
Think it might be time for a new worktop for my bench looking at these

This was my studio today, in my local Costa. Strangely, it seemed to be much more important to sketch it than to actually get cracking with the pet portrait commission  #notprocrastinating

I think its nice seeing peoples workspaces, it reinforces the individuality and craft of the items we create. I often show new supplies or part of the process on my instagram/facebook before I post new items for sale. Hopes this gives a behind the scenes insight for my customers. This was last week at my dining table, I make sure anything I don’t want shown is out of the picture…artists prerogative I reckon.

Here is my workspace. Each little pile of bead tubes is a project in the waiting - a sort of organised chaos. I am quite lucky as there is a space above our garage that the previous house owner turned into an office and it is now all mine!! The three cats are banned. Not just to keep cat hairs off of the jewellery for potential buyers with cat allergies but because previous experience has shown that when they get near my beads all those little tubes get batted onto the floor, one by one. Much more fun than a toy mouse!!
