Issues with loading photo's

Hey everyone, thanks a lot for your feedback.

I’ve been able to update the forum settings to allow webp image uploads, so it should work as before, such as below:
shopitem

You might be wondering why images are now in this format. This is because newer image formats such as webp, are far more efficient at encoding an image than jpg or png’s.

We’ve seen on average a 2-3x reduction in file size (without compression) which means that the website as a whole can load a lot faster. For example, the amount of image data required to load a shop page has been reduced by over 55%, leading to much faster loading times.

Additionally our images are now stored in localised datacenters around the world, so they’re much faster to load for anyone viewing your items from abroad than before.

When it comes to SEO, yes when you download the file it’s generically named, which we can look into, but generally the URL of the image (which is what search engines use for SEO) has actually had an improvement.

We now store the item title and the shop name in each image URL when those are available (if you upload your photos after inputting an item title) which we believe should improve the SEO of each image and therefore the item overall.

Hi Aaron,
I’ve sent a message to urgent, but it seems like the website is down. Getting ‘under heavy load’ and ‘bad gateway’ and ‘application error’ with a blank page messages.

Thanks @Sewtaylormadedesigns, @dougfolksy is actively working on it. Hopefully won’t be long now. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Thankfully we also get automatically notified if the site is down so Doug can start working through the problem straightaway.

I can’t ‘right click’ I don’t have a mouse, but thank you anyway.

Another way right click is Control and the trackpad.

Thank you x

Just found a rather nasty problem with the photos. I generally Tweet my new listings just as I post them. I did that with my new bluetits but decided to add a tag for the RSPB birdwatch and actually therefore looked at what I tweeted. NO Picture ! And no picture now on any of my many previous tweets from Folksy which makes my Twitter feed look pretty dreadful. I assume the previous ones went when you converted all the existing images to webp as they used to be there.
Can you do soemthing about this please as otherwise I need to go through a Lot of Tweets to delete them and will obviously have to stop tweeting my latest makes.
Joy xx

I noticed this too Joy but for some reason thought nothing of it

My feed looks So unprofessional. I am sure a lot of people just load a picture separately but I always hit the Tweet button, tag Folksy and it gives me nice tweets with my listing picture… but not now and it has affected ALL my tweets. I only use Twitter for ‘business’ so not at all happy .I will have to tweet an apology for anyone looking at my feed. !https://twitter.com/joysofglass

How did you tweet this
(https://twitter.com/knittingtopia/status/1619398677059043328/photo/1)

You have a photo and it has the #newonfolksy tag which appears to be automatic… ???

I just quickly set up a copy new listing and tweeted and loaded the picture separately which of course works as my picture is a .jpg not a “display.webp”. Did you load your own picture ?

I initially use the ‘tweet’ button on the listing which gives all the blurb but then add a photo to the tweet too. You can do it directly on twitter but I use crowd fire as it saves your tweets so if I want to tweet that again in a few days time I just tell it to send the tweet out.

Ah that explains why you got a photo. I’ve never bothered as it has always included the listing photo. Well it hasn’t now and lost from all my old ones too, but I think Twitter can’t handle .webp display so all just get a little no photo box.
I’ve no problem adding the photos at the same time now I know (and just did for my new sunflower tweet) but oh dear all those old tweets…grrrrrr…
I will have to delete them as they do look so unprofessional but will leave until @aaronfolksy has seen them .

I think the box with the thumbnail looked far more professional. Is this a fault or too much tinkering?

it is I’m pretty sure caused by Twitter not handling .webp as a type of image.
I was going to attach a webp to a Twitter post directly to check that out. So I downloaded a listing image from my phone and guess what… It downloaded as a display jpeg…
Will have to wait until I am on my laptop to get it as a .webp on there.

Suprisingly when I downloaded from my desktop (display.webp) and did a direct Tweet it attached it quite happily. So must be something to do with the thumbnail generated via the Tweet from a new listing.

Just dropped by to say thank you - can’t believe how much quicker it now is to list a new item! Hope the issues with the file format on Twitter can be resolved… I don’t Tweet but I’m just off to check my Pinterest as I often Pin a new item right after listing it…

That’s a very interesting point and yes I do the same and am pleased to see that Pinterest is fine

@JOYSofGLASS we believe the Twitter images is a temporary problem that we’ll look into for you, so I would hold off on deleting the tweets for now. We’ll keep you updated.

Thank Aaron. I’ll leave them be until I hear from you. At least Pinterest is ok.

Hi Aaron,
Have the photo formats changed again? I’ve downloaded a couple of photos to add to the forum and they come up with a .avif so they cant be uploaded to the forums.

Yes, and the thumbnail image is showing when you post a link!
