Has anyone else been asked to send photo id for stripe? Been using Stripe for years and I imagine it is genuine but really? They don’t even ask that for paypal? Anyone else had the same thing?
I’ve vague memories of submitting a scan of my passport to verify my identity.
Yes I had to do it years after signing up with them.
Had them ask the first time I signed up for them here. Struggled as had no licence or passport. Spoke to loads of reps each asking for something different from birth certificate, marriage etc. In the end gave up. If they ask again have the voting id now, hope they accept that or will have to close one of my shops and revert to only PayPal on here.
The problem is they have no access to UK bans to check you are who you say you are, as US based. PP UK can check who you are as they are within the banking system. They do not have a good rep online.
Did mine today, took 5 minutes
So far I havn’t had to do it (fingers crossed I havnt just jinxed it) but I do not have a passport or a driving licence either, the only photo ID I have is a Blue Badge.
Thanks everyone. It just seemed odd as I have been with them for several years now. Just wanted to check if I was the only one. Thanks
@Bearlescent I went into my stripe account yesterday to have a look around and check it was all up to date (I have re-opened my shop for Christmas) and I think that was probably what triggered the email.
Ah yes maybe so, I will leave mine well alone just in case I do the same
My SumUp card machine has a limit on it of £5000, and when you reach that point you have to verify your ID. Maybe there’s something like that that triggered it?
I hate these increasing requests for ID verification. I got one yesterday when I tried to download a knitting video from Vimeo. So the video was left in the basket, which is a shame for the maker as it’s cost them a sale.
I received the same email yesterday, please don’t click on the link as I believe it’s a scam. Simply log into your stripe account and you can see on there if there are any alertss or messages. Or contact them direct
I received the email today even though I’ve had stripe for years. All done with no problems.
It’s not spam as when I click the link it went to my account and showed my history of sells (not many, can count on the fingers of one hand
)
I’m glad… but clicking the links in an unexpected email that looks like it comes from a company that looks after money for you is not the recommended way to find out! Going to Stripe through your own login was excellent advice.
Yes, this is likely genuine, but it’s always worth going to the Stripe website to log in rather than clicking links on the email to make sure, as if scammers know a lot of people are receiving these types of email at the moment, they may take the opportunity to send similar emails themselves. Once you log in to Stripe, you should then see a notification at the top of the screen confirming you need to provide more details.
Proof of identity is something which any payment processor may ask you for as part of Money Laundering Regulations - this is something they’re legally required to do to help prevent fraud and money laundering, and companies such as PayPal and Etsy may also ask for these details.
It’s often not immediately on setting up an account, but you may be asked to verify your identity after a certain time, when a threshold is met, or if activity on your account appears suspicious. Different companies may use different criteria, and may also use different checks or accept different forms of ID.
As a lot of people appear to be receiving these requests from Stripe at the moment, it may be they’ve recently changed their criteria or improved their ID checks, meaning they’re now requesting this from people who may have been using Stripe for years without a check.
I received this email yesterday too. I won’t be doing anything as I don’t have a photo ID ![]()
Set mine up last week and wasn’t asked. If they do ask me I haven’t got a passport or a photo driving licence, so I suspect I’ll hve a battle on my hands if they do decide to ask me.
Yes once bitten twice shy. I checked on the main site and did not click the link on the email. It did say the same thing in my account so was a genuine email.
Personally I would never click on a link from a random email especially if it is to do with a payment provider.
I recently set myself up on PayPal and I did have to send a photo of. You have to be careful though as you can’t have a window in the background.
I just completed all the info that they wanted. I have quite an old phone and it did not like having to do a selfie at all. I couldn’t see myself just a pink screen, so 20 attempts later it took 3 very grumpy looking selfies. Someone will have a laugh at the other end looking at those. Hopefully that will work, lol xx
